Kromerowo: Local History, Wayside Chapel and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Kromerowo
Local history, architecture, cycling plans and travel connections offer different ways to explore Kromerowo. These include a founding charter from the 16th century, a wayside chapel, a red cycling route and municipal bus lines.
Local History and Wayside Chapel
One historical point of reference is the founding charter granted to Kromerowo by Bishop Marcin Kromer in the second half of the 16th century. This places the town’s history in the early modern period; the bishop’s name makes the personal connection clear.
A wayside chapel stands on a stone base beside National Road 16, west of Kromerowo. Built of brick, it has a rectangular ground plan. A large pointed-arch niche at the front is flanked by narrow, tall niches on the sides. The pointed arch tapers upward, giving the front a different outline from the sides. The gable roof is covered with ceramic tiles; an iron cross and a weather vane bearing the construction date are also features of the chapel. The rectangular ground plan describes its shape at ground level, while the roof and weather vane define the chapel’s silhouette.
As of September 18, 2026, the wayside chapel was listed in the register of immovable monuments under number A-4526; the entry is dated June 3, 2009. The dates refer to different things: the charter is part of Kromerowo’s founding history, while June 3, 2009 marks the monument listing. This makes it possible to distinguish the town’s history from the chapel’s monument status.
Cycling Route and Infrastructure
The 2018 forestry programme describes a 60 km red cycling route that passes through Kromerowo. The stated distance applies to the entire route, not just the section within the town. If you are planning the ride, check the current route and markings in advance.
A so-called green wildlife crossing was built in Kromerowo over National Road 16 in 2010. The road is therefore associated with two different local features: the wayside chapel west of the town and a wildlife crossing in Kromerowo.
Bus Connections and Orientation
Municipal bus route B1 runs from Wipsowo via Ramsówko, Ramsowo, Niedźwiedź, Kromerowo and Barczewo to Klebark Mały. Route B2 serves Kromerowo/Wies and runs from Leszno via Barczewo, Tumiany and Klimkowo.
Barczewo appears in the itineraries of both routes; B1 starts in Wipsowo and B2 in Leszno. The place name also differs between Kromerowo and Kromerowo/Wies—a specific point to check when comparing connections. Timetables and routes may change, so check the service for your travel date.
Kromerowo lies south of the southern tip of Lake Dadaj. In addition to its position relative to the lake, the wayside chapel’s location west of the town beside National Road 16 can help with orientation.
