Olecko offers several distinct attractions for a stay: a historic urban layout, a church with neo-Gothic furnishings, regional history, and Lake Oleckie Wielkie, with a kayaking route on the Lega. Cultural events, the sporting history of the city park and a spa complex round out these themes. When choosing a hotel in Olecko, these local highlights can help you plan your trip.

City History and Culture

Olecko’s historic urban layout, dating from the 16th to the 19th century, includes the market square and adjoining streets. It has been listed in the register of monuments since 8 November 1956 under registration number A-181. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Olecko was built between 1859 and 1861 and has been listed since 15 December 1989 under registration number A-2963. Its furnishings include a wooden neo-Gothic high altar from the second half of the 19th century, two matching side altars, a neo-Gothic pulpit and a baptismal font from the same period.

The present-day building of the former starost’s office stands on the site of a 17th-century castle, which was destroyed by fire in 1822. The Regionalna Izba Pamięci is on the second floor. The Olecka Izba Historyczna features a permanent exhibition on Olecko’s history, with objects, documents and photographs related to Olecko or Olecko County. The institution also holds monthly meetings on the history of the city and region; check the current dates before visiting.

Lake, Trails and Sporting History

Lake Oleckie Wielkie is considered a sielawa-type lake and attracts anglers. It is also the starting point for a scenic kayaking route on the Lega. The approximately 7 km Dolina Pluskwianki educational trail runs through the scenic valleys of the Pluskwianka River to Lake Oleckie Wielkie. The two routes therefore have different stated features: the Lega route is associated with kayaking and starts at the lake, while the Dolina Pluskwianki route has an approximate length and runs through river valleys.

The sporting history is also connected with the water: the pier with a diving tower on Lake Oleckie Wielkie was built around 1930 and is part of a protected sports, recreation and culture complex in Olecko. The city park lies between the lake and Gołdapska Street and is a historic site with a sporting and recreational character. The historic diving towers in the city park’s bathing area are considered unique beyond the region.

Skocznia Beach on Lake Oleckie Wielkie has a pier, a diving tower, a water slide, a beach volleyball court, a WOPR lifeguard station, a bar and a water sports equipment rental. There is also a water sports equipment rental at the beach next to the city pier.
