Discover Dobki on Jezioro Dobskie
Accommodation in Dobki
Dobki offers a clear geographical and historical setting for finding a hotel. The village lies on the southern shore of Jezioro Dobskie, in the Pojezierze Ełckie (Ełk Lake District), 7 km west of Olecko. Alongside its lake landscape, specific points of reference for planning a trip include a settlement history dating back to the 16th century, former place names, and a named route.
Location on Jezioro Dobskie
The village’s lakeside location is precisely defined: Dobki lies on the southern shore of Jezioro Dobskie. The Pojezierze Ełckie, known in English as the Ełk Lake District, also places the village within a wider landscape. There is also a clear direction and distance to Olecko: Dobki lies 7 km to its west. These details serve different purposes for orientation. The southern shore describes the immediate location, the lake district provides the regional context, and Olecko is a specific reference point with a direction and distance. If you are first looking for a landscape area, you can use the Ełk Lake District as your guide; if you need a single geographical reference point, the distance to Olecko is provided. This keeps the regional and local perspectives clearly distinct.
Settlement history and former names
Dobki’s origins are connected with the settlement of the northeastern territories of the Duchy of Prussia. In 1555, the starost Krzysztof Glaubitz sold Maciej Kibisz four Schulzenhufen for 180 marks. Kibisz undertook to establish a rent-paying village on 40 hufen under Kulm law. For the chronology, it is important that 1555 dates the sale; the establishment of the rent-paying village is described as Kibisz’s undertaking. The settlement history thus links a specific land sale with a plan to establish a village, and names the people involved, the measurements, and Kulm law.
The place names also offer a way into the village’s history. Dobki was formerly called Kibisze and, in German, Dopken; from 1938, it bore the name Markgrafswelde. These names belong to different periods. So when reading older place references, it helps to keep their chronology in mind: Kibisze and Dopken are former names, while Markgrafswelde is associated with the period from 1938 onward. This makes it possible to consider the history of the names as a distinct thread alongside the settlement history.
Historic site and named route
A former 19th-century Evangelical cemetery is located in Dobki. It adds a specific historical point of reference in the village to its settlement history. The green-marked route “Tęczą piętnastu jezior wokół sudawskiej warowni” (Across the Rainbow of Fifteen Lakes Around the Sudovian Stronghold) takes a different focus and passes through Dobki. A historic site and a named route therefore provide distinct points of reference. If you plan to follow the route, please check its current course and markings in advance. The route connects the village’s name with route planning; the former cemetery points to a chapter in the village’s history.
