Nowy Zyzdrój is a very small village in the heart of Masuria, with only about a dozen houses. It is located in the municipality of Piecki and the Mrągowo County. The village’s character is defined by a combination of dense forests, Lake Zyzdrój Wielki, a cycling route passing through several places, and two named cottages with heritage register entries.

Forest and Water Around Nowy Zyzdrój

Zyzdrój Wielki is a ribbon lake covering about 200 hectares and measuring around 4.2 kilometres in length. It is part of the area around Nowy Zyzdrój and also lies along the Krutynia River route. This makes it possible to understand the lake both in terms of its own dimensions and its connection to the Krutynia Route. Forest and water together shape the village’s landscape.

The forests around Nowy Zyzdrój are dense. Options include forest walks and cycling trips, as well as observing forest animals and birds. These nature-related activities appeal to different interests: you can combine outdoor exercise with an attentive look at the surrounding woodland. Those who are primarily interested in wildlife and birds will focus differently from those setting out on a bike ride.

Cycling Routes on Different Scales

The Krutyński Cycling Route is almost 68.7 kilometres long. It passes through Sorkwity, Jędrychowo, Grabowo, Dłużec, Gant, Machary, Nowy Zyzdrój, Spychowo, Zgon, Cierzpięty, Krutyń and Gałkowo. Nowy Zyzdrój is one of several named places along the route; the stated length refers to the entire route. This context is useful when planning a cycling trip and considering the village as a stop on a longer journey.

Another cycling route follows Fire Road No. 61 and leads almost to the village. By comparison, the Krutyński Cycling Route—with its stated length and many place names—describes a longer route, while the road reference leads close to Nowy Zyzdrój. The two references therefore provide different scales for navigating by bike: a route through several places and one that leads almost to the village.

Paddling on Zyzdrój Wielki

When paddling across Zyzdrój Wielki, the buildings of Nowy Zyzdrój are on the left and those of Zyzdrojowa Wola are on the right. The two place names provide a clear point of reference on the water. If you are planning a paddling trip, check current options with local providers.

Two Named Cottages

The cottages also provide a specific connection to the village. The cottage designated chałupa No. 6 is listed in the heritage register under number 2795, dated 2 May 1989. For chałupa No. 7, the number 2810 and the date 9 May 1989 are recorded. The dates are one week apart; together with their different numbers, this clearly distinguishes the entries. Alongside the forest, lake and routes, they provide a named link to the village’s cultural history.
