Mikolajki offers several distinct reasons to visit: the museum and neoclassical church represent its cultural heritage, while two routes lead to local attractions or through the forest and along the lakeshore. There is also a tourist promenade, seasonal leisure activities and recurring events. If you are considering the town as a travel destination, you can weigh these highlights according to what you want your trip to focus on.

Culture and Local History

The Muzeum Reformacji Polskiej in Mikolajki documents the Reformation movement in Poland and Masuria, as well as the history of the town. Its collections include numerous old prints, photographs and other documents. Its subject matter therefore ranges from the history of a wider region to that of the town itself.

The neoclassical Evangelical church Kościół Ewangelicko-Augsburski Świętej Trójcy was built in 1842 to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It adds a specific building from that period to the historical and cultural picture.

Routes, Promenade and Water

The 4.7-kilometre “Zwiedzamy Mikołajki” route leads to the town’s main attractions. The 4.9-kilometre “Wzdłuż jeziora Mikołajskiego” route runs through Mikolajki and the surrounding forest, crosses a footbridge to the western shore of the lake and follows the water, with views of the town. The routes differ in length by only 200 metres; their content differs more clearly, with one focusing on attractions and the other on forest and lakeside scenery.

The 1.3-kilometre promenade is the town’s main tourist thoroughfare. It features restaurants, taverns, cafés, shops, water sports equipment rental outlets, marinas and a passenger ship harbour. The town harbour runs along almost the entire length of the promenade, which was modernised in 2022.

The “Szlak białych żagli” route runs through the Great Masurian Lakes and passes through, among other places, Węgorzewo, Giżycko, Ryn and Mikolajki. Full-day passenger boat trips run from Mikolajki to Giżycko, Ryn or Ruciane-Nida. Timetables and operators vary by season. Check the specific timetables before travelling.

Events and Leisure Activities

The Festiwal Szantowy has been held in Mikolajki for more than 40 years. Sailors’ songs ring out on the shore of Jezioro Mikołajskie around the turn of July and August; exact dates vary. If you are travelling for the festival, check the dates of the events. During Dni Mikołajek, the “Król Sielaw” is launched into the water each year. The ceremony stages an episode from the legend associated with Mikolajki.

Baseny Letnie w Mikołajkach is a water and leisure complex with spacious outdoor pools and a varied water playground for young children; as a summer attraction, it is seasonal. The municipal bathing area has showers and lifeguard supervision; some facilities operate seasonally.

Cycling and fishing also come with specific conditions. The signposted cycling routes are loops that start and end in Mikolajki. In the surrounding area, you can fish in lakes and canals with the appropriate licence. You can choose between a general licence covering numerous lakes and canals or a licence for a specific restricted-access lake.
