Kozłowo: Manor History and Nature
Accommodation in Kozłowo
When looking for hotels in Kozłowo, you can weigh historical themes, natural features, and travel connections as separate criteria for your stay.
Manor History and Historic Traces
Kozłowo developed on the so-called Wildenow estate, when Grand Master Konrad Zöllner von Rothenstein granted Philipp Wildenaw 350 włóks under Kulm law in 1388. In 1483, the estate was divided between Maciej Wyselin and Piotr Wildenaw, giving rise to the Kozłowo and Rybno estates.
A protected former manor park dating from the 18th or 19th century has been preserved. In the regional register of immovable monuments, it is listed under registration number A-1490; the entry is dated October 26, 1983. Kozłowo’s buildings developed in a form typical of a manor settlement.
The palace of the former manor was partially damaged by a fire in 2007. The history of education is also part of the area’s early history: a one-class school was established in Kozłowo under noble patronage before 1740.
Protected Areas and Birdlife
Kozłowo is within the Puszcza Piska Natura 2000 site. Part of the village lies in the Ostoja Piska Natura 2000 habitat protection area. Part of Kozłowo also lies within the Rzeka Babant i Jezioro Białe landscape and nature complex. The geographical coverage therefore differs: Puszcza Piska encompasses the village, while the other two areas each cover only parts of it.
An ecological assessment conducted in 2011 recorded a total of 84 bird species across an area of 690 ha; 14 of them are species listed in Annex I of the EU Birds Directive. These species include the lesser spotted eagle, marsh harrier, black kite, red kite, European honey buzzard, Montagu’s harrier, white-tailed eagle, white stork, black stork, common crane, black woodpecker, middle spotted woodpecker, red-backed shrike, and woodlark. Agritourism has also developed in Kozłowo; the area is characterized by its scenery, recreational opportunities, and agriculture.
