Karwie is a village whose history can be read in its settlement pattern, historic buildings and relationship with Lake Karwie. Its development into a linear village in the 19th century gives the place a clear spatial character; a specific settlement charter from 1555 reaches further back in time. Forests and the lake also shape parts of the landscape. This means you can plan a stay in Karwie around both the village itself and its historic and natural features.

Karwie as a Linear Village by the Lake

In the 19th century, Karwie developed as a linear village. A linear village is a settlement pattern in which buildings are arranged along a road. In Karwie, the northern end extended to Lake Karwie. The village is surrounded by forests and Lake Karwie on its western side. The lake therefore features in the description of the village in two geographical ways: as the northern endpoint of the built-up area and as part of the western surroundings, together with the forests. This distinction makes the village’s location more specific.

A Settlement Charter from 1555

On September 25, 1555, Georg von Diebes, Starost of Ryn and Szestno, sold four sołectwo hides in the place then known as Karffen for 198 marks to Matz von Mertinsdorf, that is, Maciej from Marcinkowo. The sale came with an obligation to settle the village with 40 hides (668 ha). The figures refer to different parts of the transaction: four sołectwo hides were the subject of the deal; 40 hides was the extent of the settlement obligation. Karffen was the name used for the place at the time. The date, amount, land measurements and people involved give this historical event a specific context.

Historic Buildings and Their Dates

The Evangelical cemetery in Karwie dates from the mid-19th century. The dates of the brick residential buildings range from the late 19th to the early 20th century for Karwie 3 to the 1920s for Karwie 9; the latter building is classified as a manor house. The brick residential building at Karwie 14 dates from the early 20th century. Karwie thus has several periods represented side by side: the mid-19th century at the cemetery, the turn of the century at one residential building and the 1920s at the manor house.
