Maradki brings together two distinct historical points of interest: an Early Iron Age fortified settlement and a 19th-century Protestant cemetery. For travelers choosing a destination based on its historical themes, these details offer a concrete starting point: an early fortification and a much later site with its own religious character.

Fortified settlement on a moraine hill

The fortified settlement is associated with settlement by people of the West Baltic Barrow culture. The designation “Early Iron Age” places it in time; the cultural association provides a second, different classification. The site is a moraine hill in the southern part of Maradki, called “Zamek” or “Wiatraczna Góra.” Both names refer to the same hill, not to two different sites. The name and location place the fortification within the village and add a specific geographical reference to its dating.

The fortification is an irregular ring-shaped enclosure measuring 56 × 25 metres, elongated along an east-west axis. The dimensions make its shape easy to picture: its length follows the east-west axis and is considerably greater than its width. “Ring-shaped enclosure” describes the overall form, while “irregular” specifies its outline. An earthen rampart with an inner stone facing describes its construction. The stone facing is on the inner side of the rampart and is part of this fortification. The ground plan, orientation, dimensions, and construction are different features that together give a more precise picture of the site.

Its elevated position in the village makes the fenced enclosure clearly visible. The location and construction describe different aspects of the site: the hill places the ring-shaped enclosure in southern Maradki, while the rampart and stone facing characterize its construction. Take the fence into account when planning your visit, and check in advance whether the site can currently be visited.

The 19th-century Protestant cemetery

A second historical point of interest is the 19th-century Protestant cemetery, which is listed in the heritage register. It belongs to a much later period than the Early Iron Age fortified settlement. Its religious classification and dating distinguish the cemetery from the ring-shaped enclosure both in subject and in time. Maradki’s historical profile therefore includes not only an archaeological theme but also a distinct point of interest from the 19th century.

Two historical themes to guide your choice of destination

You can start choosing your destination with a simple question: are you more interested in the form of an early historical fortification or in a 19th-century Protestant cemetery? For the ring-shaped enclosure, the focus is on its ground plan, orientation, and construction; for the cemetery, on its religious classification, dating, and listing in the heritage register. This distinction helps you understand the two historical themes in Maradki without conflating them into a single site or period.
