Stare Juchy combines Masurian architectural and cultural history with marked hiking and cycling routes. The village is home to a church that has been rebuilt several times, a reconstructed Masurian cottage, and an erratic boulder protected as a natural monument. A steam locomotive at the railway station provides another landmark. The trails vary in length, destination, and route: they lead to an erratic boulder, to Kałtki, or back to Stare Juchy via a lake. These themes can help you choose different focuses when planning your stay.

Church and Masurian architectural history

The historic church dates from the 16th century and has been rebuilt several times. It houses an altar dating from 1501 and a pulpit dating from 1574, as well as a Gothic triptych from 1591. Together, the three dates mark different points in the history of the church’s furnishings. The building and its individual works of art thus tell of different stages in the village’s history.

A reconstructed Masurian cottage offers another perspective on regional architectural history. It dates from the first half of the 19th century, probably 1809, and has wooden three-post arcaded porches. The present building was reconstructed in the 1980s; its original model came from nearby Kałtki. This distinguishes clearly between the probable date of the original model and the later reconstruction of the present building.

Erratic boulder and local landscape

The grey granite erratic boulder in Stare Juchy is protected as a natural monument. It is 4.5 m long and 2.25 m wide, with a circumference of 10.61 m. Among the largest erratic boulders in Masuria, it combines specific measurements with a distinctive tradition: according to legend, the stone was once an altar used for sacrifices by the Old Prussians. Its measurable dimensions and legendary interpretation thus stand side by side, without presenting the story as historical fact.

At the edge of the village, the Młyńska Struga Canal connects Lakes Rekąty and Jędzelewo. Alongside the individual natural monument, this named link between two lakes offers another way to explore the landscape of Stare Juchy.

Choose a hiking trail by length and destination

Three marked hiking trails differ in length and route. The yellow-marked trail runs from Stare Juchy to an erratic boulder and is 1 km long. The green-marked route from Stare Juchy to Kałtki is 4.5 km long. If you prefer a loop, follow the red circular trail: it passes Lake Garbas on its way back to Stare Juchy and is 7 km long. You can choose between a short route to an erratic boulder, a trail with Kałtki as its destination, and a longer loop via the lake. The distances and destinations can help you choose the right focus for your hiking plans.

Explore by bicycle

The two marked cycling routes can also be compared by route type and destination. The green cycling route forms a loop of approximately 19.6 km: from Stare Juchy, it passes through Zawady Ełckie and Gorłówko before returning to the village. The blue cycling route runs from Stare Juchy via Szczecinowo and Gawliki Małe to Kałtki and is approximately 31 km long. It is therefore the longer of the two routes described. The routes also differ in their course: one is a loop returning to Stare Juchy, while the other lists Kałtki as its destination. When choosing between them, you can first decide whether returning to your starting point or cycling to Kałtki matters more to you.

Finding your way when arriving

When arriving from the direction of Ełk, the OL49-29 steam locomotive stands about 200 m before the railway station building, on the left-hand side of the tracks. The directions and its position relative to the tracks can help you locate it as you approach.
