Klimontów can be understood as a travel destination primarily through its local history, sacred architecture and loess landscape. Its local features differ markedly in period and character.

Churches and Architectural History

St. Jacek’s Church is part of the former Dominican monastery in Klimontów. The monastery complex combines Late Gothic, Mannerist and early Baroque forms; the church interior is designed in the Baroque and Rococo styles. Several styles thus stand side by side at this site, while the church itself also has a clearly dated history: it was built between 1617 and 1620 and consecrated by Bishop T. Oborski on 10 July 1633.

St. Jacek’s Church also houses a copy of the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Rosary, dating from the first third of the 15th century. The Collegiate Church of St. Joseph provides another point of architectural comparison: it resembles St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. This is a comparison, not an assertion that the two buildings are identical.

Synagogue Architecture and Local History

The synagogue in Klimontów has a different spatial layout. Behind its Ionic portico, two stairways running crosswise lead to the women’s gallery. A partition between the main room, vestibule and women’s gallery has also been preserved. The stairway arrangement and partition thus illustrate two different aspects of the interior architecture. The synagogue is the only surviving material remnant of the former Jewish population in the Klimontów landscape; it is not normally in use.

Klimontów was founded around 1240 by Klemens, the castellan of Kraków; the town’s name is also derived from him. The town is linked biographically to Wiktor (Bruno) Jasieński, who was born in Klimontów. These historical connections complement the architectural history with the town’s founding and a personal connection through place of birth.

Fair and Landscape

The Jarmark na św. Jacka (St. Jacek’s Fair) takes place annually from 15 to 17 August. For your specific travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year, as they may change in the future. Alongside the permanent buildings, this recurring event can also serve as a guide when choosing your travel dates.

The landscape around Klimontów is characterized by a very dense network of loess valleys and ravines, which complement the Koprzywianka Valley. This aspect of the landscape differs markedly from the architecture in town: it draws attention to the surrounding landforms, while the churches and synagogue bring the architectural history into focus.
