When planning a stay in Opatów, the town’s history, architecture and opportunities for active pursuits offer different points of focus. You can focus on the surviving urban layout and church art, or include the described cycling routes and excursions as additional topics. Each historic site has its own particular character.

City Gate and Medieval Market Square

The Brama Warszawska is the only surviving one of Opatów’s four historic city gates. The gates were part of the town’s defensive system, so the surviving gate also offers a glimpse of its historic fortifications. It was built of stone between 1520 and 1530, on a square ground plan. Its construction period, material and form give the structure a clearly defined character.

The market square in the old town has also retained its medieval layout. The gate and the market square represent two different aspects of the town’s history: its defences and the layout of its urban centre. Those interested in Opatów’s past can therefore consider its built form and historic layout as distinct topics, without reducing them to a single monument.

Church Architecture and Relief Art

The Collegiate Church of St Martin is a Romanesque building with later Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque alterations and details. Its architecture therefore cannot be attributed to just one period: its Romanesque character provides the starting point, while later alterations reflect additional stylistic periods. This offers architecture enthusiasts a layered way to explore the building’s history.

The Lament of Opatów is a distinct chapter in art history. The bas-relief panel depicts 40 figures mourning the death of Chancellor Krzysztof Szydłowiecki. It is one of two reliefs on the chancellor’s tomb, which is located on the left side of the transept in the Collegiate Church of St Martin. The relief’s location, form and figures link the memory of Szydłowiecki with the church’s interior.

The Bernardine church and monastery complex also has several architectural features: the present-day Bernardine Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a single-nave, late Baroque stone building, partly constructed of brick. A restored wall surrounds the church and monastery; it is partly reinforced with buttresses and fitted with loopholes. The complex’s history also includes the first wooden church, built in 1040 on the site of the settlement of Żmigród at the time.

Museum and Krówka Opatowska

The Museum of Geodesy and Cartography in Opatów preserves surveying and cartographic instruments from before the digital era. The collection includes nearly 1,000 exhibits, including an extensive collection of cadastral maps. The objects are displayed in multimedia-equipped rooms and in a retro-style office of a licensed surveyor. The instruments, maps and office furnishings offer different ways to explore the history of surveying.

Another point of interest is Krówka Opatowska. Workshops are held at Krówkarenka, where you can learn about the traditional, handmade production of the sweets. If you would like to include this in your plans, check before travelling whether a workshop is taking place on your chosen date.

Cycling Routes and Getting Around
