Końskie offers several different ways to explore its history: the castle and park complex, churches with their own architectural and furnishing histories, and memorial sites along the “Szlakiem zabytków i miejsc pamięci” trail. SOWA offers a different focus: its offerings include a permanent exhibition, a workshop for hands-on exploration, and workshops. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Castle and Park History

Jan Małachowski began building the castle and park complex around 1748, when he obtained town rights for the place from King Augustus III. The start of construction and the granting of town rights thus belong to the same historical context. In the first half of the 19th century, Stanisław Małachowski brought the architect Franciszek Maria Lanci to Końskie. Lanci designed the Egyptian Orangery, a Neo-Gothic chapel, and the park wall with towers.

The designs mentioned here combine different architectural forms: an orangery, a chapel, and a walled complex with towers. Anyone interested in architectural history can explore several types of structures within the castle and park complex, rather than focusing on just one building.

Churches with Distinctive Historical Details

A sundial dating from 1621 is located on the southern retaining wall of the presbytery of the Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas and St. Adalbert. The church’s stone, Late Baroque high altar dates from 1749: it features a crucifix beneath a canopy supported by columns. The two details offer different points of interest—the sundial on the retaining wall and the altar with its clearly described design.

The Church of St. John the Baptist and St. Anne tells another architectural story. It was built in 1770 by Jan Faygel on commission from the Małachowski family. During restoration work in 2010, old frescoes were uncovered and restored. The church’s construction date and a much later effort to preserve the frescoes thus sit side by side. Compared with the details of the collegiate church, the focus here is on a different period and on the wall paintings.

Memorial Sites and Hands-On Activities

The “Szlakiem zabytków i miejsc pamięci” trail leads to Katyń Avenue, with its oaks and plaques commemorating the victims murdered in 1940. It also leads to Warsztatowa Street, where an obelisk commemorates Captain Jan Stoiński, the first commander of the Końskie ZWZ-AK district. The trail thus connects a memorial site with oaks and plaques to a monument dedicated to a named individual.

SOWA offers a different way to explore: its permanent exhibition is complemented by a workshop for hands-on exploration and workshops. This makes it different from the historic churches and memorial sites. Check the current operating arrangements and programme before your visit.

More Options in the Wider Końskie Destination

In the wider Końskie destination, Sielpia offers more opportunities for outdoor activities; beach facilities and watercraft rentals are seasonal. There are three Nordic walking routes there; special poles can be borrowed free of charge from the local Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji. Check on availability before your trip. Organised kayaking trips from Sielpia follow the Czarna Konecka for about six kilometres to Jacentów, beyond the bridge. This seasonal activity must be booked in advance.

A longer cycling trip is also described: “Rowerem dookoła Końskich” is a 45-kilometre circular cycling route that starts and ends in Sielpia. The activities on offer thus differ considerably—from memorial sites and historic buildings in Końskie to Nordic walking, a kayaking trip that requires advance booking, or a circular bike ride. When choosing your stay, you can weigh these cultural and active options separately.
