The local history of Będziemyśl is reflected in a variety of features: the parish church of St. Hyacinth, a stone statue of St. John of Nepomuk near the church, a bell in the bell tower beside the parish church, the Zamczysko castle site, and the recurring Piknik z Pierogiem. Architectural history, archaeological traces, and a festival tradition offer different ways to explore the place. When planning your trip, you can focus on architecture, older earthwork remains, or a culinary event.

Church, Statue, and Bell

The parish church of St. Hyacinth was built in the Neo-Gothic style between 1919 and 1921. Neo-Gothic refers to the revival of Gothic forms in a later period of construction. The style term describes the design, while the dates indicate when it was built. The term therefore refers to an architectural style, not a medieval construction date. For travelers interested in architecture, the parish church combines a specific construction period with a clearly defined style.

Near the church stands an 18th-century stone statue of St. John of Nepomuk. The bell tower beside the parish church contains a bell cast in Berlin in 1833. Chronologically, the statue from the 18th century is followed by the bell being cast in 1833 and then the church’s construction in 1919–1921. Several distinct historical layers are thus associated with the church features.

Zamczysko and the Village Center

Zamczysko offers a different focus. The castle site lies in the southeastern part of the village, on Winnica Hill. Earthwork remains are preserved there and are thought to date from the 15th century. A castle site and preserved earthwork remains offer a different way to explore local history than a church with a specific construction date. Here, the focus is on the terrain and archaeological traces. The estimated date of the earthwork remains should be understood differently from the specific construction years of the parish church.

The Jubilee Cross offers another point of interest: it stands in the center of Będziemyśl and is more than 15 meters high. Whereas construction or creation dates are important for the church, statue, and bell, the height describes the cross in terms of its dimensions. Its location and height complement the dates with spatial characteristics. This makes it possible to consider different historical points of reference side by side without conflating their respective features.

The two features also differ in location: the cross stands in the village center, while Zamczysko is in the southeastern part of the village on Winnica Hill.

Pierogi as a Festival Theme

The recurring festival tradition of Piknik z Pierogiem adds another dimension. At the 12th edition, held on July 28, 13,000 pierogi were offered in three varieties. The number gives an idea of the scale of that edition, while the three varieties make the culinary selection more tangible. The date, quantity, and selection relate to that past festival day and should be distinguished from the recurring tradition. In this way, the picnic adds a time-specific cultural feature to the permanent buildings and archaeological traces.

Będziemyśl therefore offers a range of themes to explore: the church, statue, and bell lead to architecture and historical layers; Zamczysko to a castle site with earthwork remains thought to date from the 15th century; and the Jubilee Cross to a distinctive village feature with a specific height. Piknik z Pierogiem adds its own focus on a past edition of the festival and its three varieties of pierogi. You can decide which of these perspectives will shape your stay most, depending on your interests.
