The history of Żyraków includes several distinct threads: the changing use of a chapel and the history of today’s parish church. There is also the manor park, with its pond and old trees, as well as the architectural character of the manor house. For choosing a destination, the focus is on church and architectural history, along with specific features of a park landscape. The dates relate to different events and buildings.

The former chapel and its changing use

At the end of the 18th century, the village’s then owner had the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity decommissioned and, after adding an upper storey, converted into a granary. In 1946, Witold Pieniążek, the manor’s then owner, returned the former chapel building to the parish. This made it possible to convert it and use it again as a place of worship. A year later, in 1947, Bishop Jan Stepa consecrated the renovated chapel. This sequence runs from the chapel’s decommissioning, through its use as a granary, to its return and renewed use as a place of worship.

The present-day parish church

The present-day parish church has its own history: Bishop Jerzy Ablewicz consecrated it on 29 May 1983. Three stones from the Holy Land were set into its cornerstone: from the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem, from Ain Karim and from the Mount of Olives. These places of origin give this architectural detail a distinct geographical connection. The precise date and the bishop’s name also clearly place the consecration of the present-day church in time.

The interior furnishings also offer specific points of interest. At the centre of the choir area of the parish church in Żyraków is a 17th-century painting depicting the Most Holy Trinity. The remaining elements of the interior furnishings are by Bogdana Ligęza-Drwal. Thus, a single painting with a specific date and subject, and the authorship of the rest of the furnishings, stand as distinct aspects.

Pond, trees and manor house

The manor park adds a landscape perspective to the church history. A pond lies in the eastern part of the park. Remnants of old trees have also been preserved, with oaks and maples predominating. These details describe different features: the pond is located within the park, while the information about the trees characterises the surviving growth by age and predominant species. Together, they create a specific picture of a water feature and an old stand of trees dominated by oaks and maples.

The manor house in Żyraków has the character of a simple, suburban country manor and somewhat resembles urban public buildings. This is a qualified description: the house is characterised as a manor house, while its resemblance to public buildings adds to but does not replace that description. Together with the park, the manor house broadens the picture of Żyraków to include architecture and landscape alongside church architecture.

These themes can be distinguished when choosing a destination: the chapel and present-day parish church represent different periods in the history of the church, while the park and manor house bring landscape features and architecture to the fore. If you are looking for a destination with cultural, historical and landscape themes like these, you can take these features into account when deciding whether to visit Żyraków.
