Ujsoly: History, Traditions and Historic Trails
Accommodation in Ujsoly
Ujsoly offers travelers several points of interest: the history of its settlement, the tradition of the Wawrzyńcowe Hudy, a historic trail and the “Podmuńcolskie spacery” Quest. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around whether you’re mainly interested in local history, traditional customs or a specific activity.
Local History and Pastoral Heritage
Ujsoly was probably founded in the 16th century by Wallachian settlers, pastoral peoples from the Balkans. The settlers established sheep and cattle grazing on the mountain pastures and built kosory and szałasy there. Their origins, pastoral farming and these structures therefore form part of a shared pastoral context in the history of the village.
The Roman Catholic parish of St. Joseph in Ujsoly was established in 1913. This date provides a much later chronological reference point than the probable 16th-century settlement. When placing the village in its historical context, you can therefore consider Wallachian settlement and church history as distinct strands.
The Tradition of the Wawrzyńcowe Hudy
The tradition of the Wawrzyńcowe Hudy passes down knowledge, skills, memories and community customs across generations. These include building the structures, preparing the fire and lighting it ceremonially. So it is not just about the visible fire: construction knowledge and communal rituals are also passed on.
At the Wawrzyńcowe Hudy in Ujsoly, multi-tiered fires were lit on August 6 and 7, 2022. As part of a municipal project in 2026, workshops on building the Hudy will be offered in Ujsoly, Glinka, Soblówka and Złatna. They will share knowledge about construction, symbolism and the rituals involved in lighting tall fires. The dated account of 2022 and the 2026 workshop offering provide different insights into the tradition: a specific event and the passing on of knowledge.
Historic Trail and Quest
The historic trail starts in the center of Ujsoly and leads toward Złatna. Guided historical walks can be arranged along the trail. If you plan to join a guided walk, make arrangements in advance.
The “Podmuńcolskie spacery” Quest starts at the parking lot by the “Pod Muńcołem” amphitheater in Ujsoly, on Bystra Street. It is intended for children and teenagers, families with children, and adults. The different starting points help with orientation: the historic trail starts in the center, while the Quest starts at the parking lot by the amphitheater. This lets you distinguish between the two activities by their respective starting points, without treating them as a single route.
The Ujsolski Park of Active Tourism and Recreation is also located in Ujsoly. Its name puts the emphasis elsewhere than local history and the Hud tradition: active tourism and recreation are explicitly the focus here. If you’d like to take part in a workshop, check the dates in advance.
