Preserved Farmsteads and Chapel

Traditional rural farmsteads made of wood or timber and masonry have been preserved in Wierzchowisko and can be seen there. Examples include houses whose roof ridges run parallel to the road. The ridge is the upper edge where the roof slopes meet; its alignment along the road gives you a specific architectural feature to look for as you explore. Thus, both the material and the position of the house are part of the traditional building style. The material and the ridge’s position answer different questions: one concerns the construction method, the other the house’s orientation in relation to the road. Together, they make the description of the farmsteads more specific without treating the different building styles as identical. A brick chapel dating from the early 20th century provides a second, historically situated point of reference in the built landscape. The farmsteads and the chapel offer different perspectives: rural architectural forms on the one hand, and a religious building on the other.

Settlement History and Earlier Traces

Archaeological site 2 in Wierzchowisko is associated with traces of Neolithic settlement. Wierzchowisko was first mentioned in court records in 1398. Historically, the area consisted essentially of two settlements located close to each other: Wierzchowisko, a royal village with a sołectwo (village administrator’s office), and Wierzchowisko Małe, a village owned by a knightly family. The royal village belonged to the Olsztyn starosty and was associated with the estate complex whose centre was Olsztyn Castle. The use of the landscape also offers a tangible link to the area’s history: in 1564, Wierzchowisko had a mill by a fish-stocked pond. The history thus encompasses both different forms of ownership and administration and a specific indication of the landscape’s former use.

Parish Tradition and Celebration Programme

The announced event was due to begin at the chapel in Wierzchowisko, followed by a procession to the church. The route and timing may change in future editions. The programme announced for the 2026 parish festival included grilled meat dishes, soups, cakes, bigos, gołąbki and pickled herring; the selection may vary in future editions.
