Szemud: Hiking Routes and Church Heritage
Accommodation in Szemud
Szemud is located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, in Wejherowo County, and is the seat of the Szemud Gmina. The town lies on the S6 expressway and Voivodeship Road 224. For travelers planning activities and accommodation together, the routes offer a range of options: a 4.6-kilometer loop, lake and cultural experiences, and a longer tour through protected landscapes.
Routes Between the Lake, Forest, and History
Green Route No. 31 completes its loop after 4.6 km. Its starting point is next to the headquarters of the LGD “Kaszubska Droga.” After 800 meters, the route turns onto Nadrzeczna Street and then continues along a natural-surface path.
The starting points differ: Green Route No. 32 begins at a parking lot near Lake Okuniewo, while Red Route No. 33 starts at a parking lot by Lake Czarne. After 500 meters, Green Route No. 32 offers a view of Lake Okuniewo. It also reaches the historic paved long-distance road Via Regia, also known as the Royal Road or “kocie łby.” Red Route No. 33 runs mainly along unpaved and forest roads. Before entering the forest, it crosses Road 224. Thus, No. 32 focuses on lake views and the historic road, while No. 33 features unpaved and wooded sections.
Black Route No. 34 is a nearly 19 km loop and takes about three hours. Compared with Green Route No. 31 at 4.6 km, it is considerably longer; the approximate duration provides an additional planning guide alongside the distance comparison. The route passes through Tricity Landscape Park and into a nature reserve. Check the reserve boundaries locally.
St. Nicholas Church and History
The parish of St. Nicholas is documented as early as the 14th century; before 1370, there was a chapel on the road leading to the cemetery. The present brick church replaced an older half-timbered church in the 1920s. Partially preserved Baroque paintings depicting St. Nicholas and Our Lady of the Rosary can be seen inside. The furnishings also include a monstrance with a radiant glory dating from the second half of the 18th century. The church heritage thus encompasses both architectural history and surviving sacred art.
Kashubian Surroundings
Agricultural land, forests, and lakes shape the rural character of the wider Szemud Gmina area. Kashubian culture, customs, and traditions are also maintained in the surrounding area. The gmina organizes regional and international events, including harvest festivals, folk festivals, and competitions.
