Discover Stuhm: Castle, Lakes and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Stuhm
Stuhm can be explored from three different perspectives: its castle and historic urban fabric, the lake landscape at Jezioro Sztumskie, and the tourist routes through the region. For your stay, you can focus on history, a walk or cycle ride, or making the most of the lake in summer.
Routes and regional orientation
Stuhm lies on the Gdańsk–Malbork–Toruń tourist route and the international R-1 cycling route. Stuhm is also part of the “Szlak Powiśla” tourist route, which runs from Elbląg via Malbork to Kwidzyn. The three connections have different emphases: R-1 is explicitly designated as a cycling route, while “Szlak Powiśla” is also described as passing through several towns. This can help you decide which routes to consider, depending on whether cycling or a tourist connection through the region is important for your trip.
Lake landscape and paths at Jezioro Sztumskie
Stuhm lies on an isthmus between Jezioro Sztumskie and Jezioro Barlewickie, which were once connected. A lit walking and cycling path about five kilometres long runs around Jezioro Sztumskie. The loop combines a specific distance with the option of exploring the surroundings on foot or by bike. As the distance is approximate, it should be treated as a guide when planning your route.
The Jaszczurowe Wzgórze recreation and leisure area is also located on Jezioro Sztumskie. It has a viewpoint overlooking the town. Alongside the loop, this makes the view over the town another feature of the lake. There is a supervised bathing area there during the summer season. If you plan to swim, check the local information on its opening arrangements in advance.
Castle and historic urban fabric
Sztum Castle is a 14th-century Teutonic castle. It was the former summer residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order and is now home to a branch of the Muzeum Zamkowe w Malborku. The castle thus links its medieval history with its present-day role as the site of a museum branch.
The urban layout of Sztum’s Old Town, together with the castle complex, is also listed in the Pomeranian Voivodeship heritage register. It was entered on 16 July 1959. For historical context, therefore, the castle is relevant not only as a separate building, but also in relation to the fabric of the Old Town.
Another perspective on Powiat sztumski
The wider travel area also includes Dzierzgoń in Powiat sztumski. The town lies outside the Sztum subregion covered here and offers its own historical point of interest. The Church of the Most Holy Trinity was built on the castle hill in the 13th century and preserves a tombstone dating from 1347.
The Church of the Holy Spirit in Dzierzgoń tells a different story: it is part of a former Reformed monastery complex. Its barrel-vaulted ceiling is entirely decorated with polychrome painting and boarded. Together, the two churches illustrate different aspects of the wider Powiat sztumski—from a medieval church with a dated tombstone to a church interior associated with a former monastery complex.
