Discover Jastarnia: harbor and fishing traditions
Accommodation in Jastarnia
Jastarnia combines a harbor with several distinct themes: fishing and seafaring, preserved fishermen’s buildings, and historic structures and fortifications. If you are looking for a hotel in Jastarnia, these highlights can help you choose what to explore based on your travel interests. The harbor is a place for maritime activities and excursions on the bay; the streets and individual buildings reveal the town’s fishing traditions. The fortifications add another chapter to the town’s character.
The harbor, seafaring and time by the water
Jastarnia’s harbor was built between 1926 and 1931. It serves fishing, sailing, passenger transport and tourism, bringing together several different uses. Its role in training is also part of its history: the harbor was the first facility in Poland where yacht captains were trained.
The pier at the harbor is a place to stroll and relax throughout the season, and offers a viewpoint over Puck Bay. Local fishermen also offer excursions on the bay in traditional fishing boats. These are different ways to plan your day: a walk with a view or a trip on the water. If you plan to take an excursion, check the schedule in advance.
Fishing traditions and notable buildings
Traditional fishermen’s buildings have been preserved in Jastarnia and shape the character of the town. A walk through the narrow streets between former fishermen’s cottages is considered a special visitor experience. The “Chata Rybacka” museum adds another example: an authentic rectangular fishermen’s cottage dating from 1881.
Another distinctive building is the Neo-Baroque fishermen’s church, Kościół pw. Nawiedzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny. Built in the 1930s, it is considered an outstanding architectural monument in the town. Its interior is decorated in blue and celadon. A particularly striking feature is the richly decorated, boat-shaped pulpit, which appears to be carried by rough sea waves. Every summer, the church hosts organ concerts by well-known organists from Poland and abroad. As concert dates may vary, check in advance when performances are scheduled.
Fortifications and visiting conditions
Since 2005, the open-air museum of fortifications, Skansen Fortyfikacji, has been located on the grounds of Ośrodek Oporu Jastarnia. Its four main defensive bunkers are “Sokół,” “Sabała,” “Saragossa” and “Sęp”; there are also light defensive structures. The interior of the “Sabała” museum bunker can be visited in spring and summer. If you plan a visit, check the current arrangements in advance.
The most striking surviving feature of the “Jastarnia” anti-aircraft battery is a reinforced-concrete fire-control tower. It stands on the dune crest at the access point to Beach No. 54. Another notable landmark is the Jastarnia lighthouse: built in 1938, it is 13.3 metres tall and topped with a conical roof. The lighthouse is currently closed to visitors; as access conditions may change, check before planning a visit.
