The churches, nearby Lake Mąkowo and the Kamionka give Wierzchowo a cultural and natural setting. If you are looking for hotels in the area, you can base your choice on whether local history, waterside scenery or trails are especially important to your stay.

Churches and local history

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Wierzchowo is a rectangular brick building. A wooden bell tower stands on its façade. The church was completed and consecrated in 1990; its consecration took place on 18 July 1992. Its rectangular floor plan, brickwork and tower give the church a distinct architectural profile.

The area’s history also reaches far back: in the Middle Ages, Wierzchowo belonged to the Teutonic Order. The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is associated with 16 July. If you are interested in specific local arrangements around this day, check with local sources in advance. In the nearby locality of Wierzchowo Dworzec, there is also a filial church of Our Lady Help of Christians; it belongs to the parish of Wierzchowo.

Lake, river and trails

Lake Mąkowo lies near Wierzchowo and covers almost 30 hectares. Today, extensive reed beds stretch across the lake area. The Kamionka offers another connection to the water: it rises near Wierzchowo, on the border of the Człuchów municipality, and is considered suitable for kayaking. Check local water conditions and access before setting out.

The St. James walking route runs mostly through fields, forests and nearby villages. The EDK St. James walking route passes through Mąkowo, Wierzchowo, Mirogniew, Bukowo, Przytok, Dębnica and Człuchów. Near the lake, the route has wet sections; mud can make walking difficult, and conditions vary by season. Check the current trail markers before setting out. Another named route, the Wierzchowo Człuchowskie horse trail, is 0.9 kilometres long; check its current conditions locally.
