When choosing a destination, specific natural and cultural attractions can be more helpful than a general impression of the lake. In Gawrych-Ruda, two beach piers with animal tracks set into their planks, a section of the “Wokół Wigier” cycling route and a historic obelisk by the church appeal to different interests. The “Jeziora” nature trail, meanwhile, is nearby, in the area around Słupiańska Bay. This distinction helps you include sites in the village and a themed destination in the surrounding area separately in your travel plans.

Animal Tracks on the Beach Piers

Completed in 2022, each of the beach piers features an educational trail titled “Tropy zwierząt” (“Animal Tracks”); the tracks are set into the planks. One pier depicts a grey heron, a swan and a mallard, while the other features a wolf, a beaver and a Eurasian otter from Wigry National Park. The two trails therefore differ in their animal motifs: three bird species are set against the tracks of three mammal species.

Nature Themes Nearby

Nearby, in the area around Słupiańska Bay, the “Jeziora” nature trail takes a broader approach. Visitors can learn about forest and peatland habitats, discover more about the history of Lake Wigry and the differences between lake types, and observe cormorants and other birds. They can also learn about lichens and the area's plant and animal species, and see sculptures created during an international art symposium. If you want to combine nature observation with educational content, the trail offers more than the individual animal tracks on the beach piers.

Cycling Routes with Different Features

After it was converted into a cycling route in 2020, “Wokół Wigier” climbed the hill in Gawrych Ruda as far as the church, where it turned towards Bryzgiel. Another cycling route nearby is called “Do Gawrych Rudy przez dolinę Czarnej Hańczy” (“To Gawrych Ruda via the Czarna Hańcza Valley”). After a small beach and a landing stage, it turns left downhill onto an unpaved road. It then runs close to the lakeshore between holiday resorts and summer houses, offering views of Lake Wigry and the opposite shore. The route descriptions differ mainly in their reference points: the church and direction of Bryzgiel on the one hand, and the road surface and lakeside views on the other. Check current conditions before setting out on the second route.

The Obelisk and Earlier Local History

An obelisk in honour of Pope John Paul II was unveiled by the Church of Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe on 16 October 2005. The occasion was the 27th anniversary of his pontificate. Another historical reference dates back to 1668, when the Ruda na Hrudzie (Gawrych Ruda) ironworks belonged to the Suchocki family of ironmasters from Masovia. The timeline therefore stretches from a 17th-century ironworks to a 21st-century obelisk.
