Suwalski: Hiking Trails, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Suwalski
The experiences described in Suwalski range from hiking trails through a landscape shaped by the Ice Age to historic churches and seasonal activities on the water or ski slopes. To plan your trip, you can first decide which themes interest you most.
Hiking Trails and Family Experiences
The longest hiking trail in Suwalski Landscape Park is the 21-kilometer section of the blue trail “Znad Szelmentu przez Park Krajobrazowy” within the park. A shorter option is the six-kilometer educational trail “U źródeł Szeszupy”: it runs from Szeszupka to Łopuchowo through the park’s Ice Age-shaped landscape. The type of trail, its length and the named endpoints provide different points of reference when choosing a route.
People with specific mobility needs can travel the entire length of the educational trail “U źródeł Szeszupy” by car. Another activity for families with children is the educational trail “Opowieści Turtula.” There, children follow animal tracks and, among other things, reach a maze with animal sculptures. In Rutka-Tartak, the “Dolina Przygód nad Szeszupą” offers children recreation, play and education about animals that live in the Suwałki region.
Landforms and Nature
At 256.4 meters, Góra Cisowa is an example of a terminal moraine. It is also known as Sypana and Gulbineska; because of its shape, it is also called “Suwalska Fudżijama.” A different natural landscape can be seen at the “Głazowisko Bachanowo nad Czarną Hańczą” reserve: approximately 10,000 erratic boulders lie there in an area of less than one hectare. They range in circumference from half a meter to eight meters.
These details describe two very different landscape features: a distinctive moraine hill and a dense field of large erratic boulders. If you are interested in the region’s distinctive landscape, you can include them as separate highlights in your trip plans. The name of the educational trail “U źródeł Szeszupy” and its named endpoints also provide a specific link to a hike through the Ice Age-shaped surroundings.
Water, Routes and Seasonal Activities
At the foot of the Wigry Monastery there is a landing stage for the “Tryton,” which makes regular trips on Lake Wigry. The trips are seasonal; check whether they operate during your visit. For cycling, the route “Wokół rynnowego jeziora Hańcza” is described. It runs through Suwalski Landscape Park and around the ribbon lake Hańcza.
A route around Lake Hańcza passes through the holiday village of Błaskowizna and by a beach there with a pier and information boards. These facilities may be seasonal. In winter, the Wojewódzki Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji “Szelment” offers a snow-covered ski slope with runs 300 and 400 meters long. As seasonal operating conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before making specific winter plans.
Churches, Museum and Visitor Information
At the Camaldolese Monastery in Wigry, the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary serves the local parish and numerous visitors. Its present condition dates to the reconstruction following wartime damage, which began in 1947. Wodziłki is home to a historic wooden Old Believers’ prayer house, known as a molenna. Inside are several icons, old books and crosses.
You can visit the Muzeum Wigier on your own, with an audio guide or as part of a guided tour. Check the current arrangements for these formats before your visit. Educational activities take place there year-round on weekdays; as the program may be revised seasonally, it is also worth checking what is on during your visit. The offices and tourist information center of Suwalski Landscape Park are in Turtul.
Whether you want to focus on hiking routes, landforms, culture or a seasonal activity, these different interests can guide your trip planning and your search for a hotel in Suwalski.
