Sejny offers two distinct themes for a visit: architectural and cultural history, and a long-distance hiking route. The Basilica Minor and the historic Dominican monastery represent the cultural side; the red Trail No. 1 passes through Sejny and connects the town with a long route between Jastrzębna and Rakówek near Gołdap. If you are looking for hotels in Sejny, you can first decide whether your stay will focus mainly on exploring historic sites or on a hiking trip.

Basilica: Architectural History and Works of Art

The Basilica Minor of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sejny was built in the early 17th century in the Renaissance style. However, an object inside dates from a much earlier period: it houses a Gothic shrine Madonna and Child from the early 15th century. It is therefore important to distinguish between the date of the building and that of the artwork. The Madonna is not simply part of the basilica’s Renaissance dating; its own date goes back further. This makes the distinction between architectural history and older religious art concrete.

The organ can also be considered through two separate dates: its Rococo facade dates from 1762, while its mechanism dates from 1907. The facade is the decorated front, while the mechanism refers to a different part of the instrument. The two years therefore refer to different components and should not be combined into a single date for the organ’s creation. Renaissance, Gothic and Rococo here refer to different parts of the building’s and the artworks’ history.

Dominican Monastery: Exhibitions and Concerts

The historic Dominican monastery in Sejny includes exhibition halls, the “Zapiecek” Gallery, the Diocesan Museum and an ethnographic room. The ethnographic room brings traces of the area’s cultural diversity to light. The monastery thus presents several cultural perspectives side by side: exhibition spaces, a gallery, a museum and an ethnographic viewpoint. If you are interested in cultural history, you can take these different themes into account when planning your stay, rather than treating them as a single museum subject.

Concerts are held in the courtyard of the Dominican monastery. If a concert is important to your travel plans, check the current concert dates in advance.

Hiking: the long-distance red Trail No. 1

The red Trail No. 1 is a 210-kilometre long-distance route. It runs from Jastrzębna via Sejny to Rakówek near Gołdap. This route places Sejny within a regional itinerary that extends far beyond a stay in the town. The trail is therefore distinct from a walk around Sejny: its length and the stated endpoints describe a long-distance route. If you plan to hike the trail, check the current route status before setting out. This will let you plan around the stage you actually choose, rather than confusing the total length with a walk in town.
