Sejny can be explored on two scales: individual historic buildings and the layout of the city as a whole. King Sigismund Augustus founded Sejny in 1563. Sejny’s historic urban layout has retained its character to this day; this includes what is known as development around several market squares. This combination makes the city’s history relevant to travel planning too: rather than focusing on just one destination, you can consider how buildings fit into the inherited urban layout. This offers a way to explore the development of the town across several historical periods.

The Former Dominican Monastery Complex

A key element of the urban and architectural complex is the former Dominican monastery complex, dating from the 17th century. Work on the monastery was completed in 1706. The two dates serve different purposes: the 17th century places the complex in its historical context, while 1706 marks the completion of the work. This is more than a chronicle of individual years for understanding Sejny, since the former monastery complex is part of the city as a whole.

The former Dominican monastery hosts exhibitions, concerts and academic symposia. The complex also houses the Diocesan Museum. If you are planning a visit, check the museum’s current visiting arrangements in advance.

Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Another important historic site is the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The church dates from the 17th century; in 1973, the Holy See elevated it to the status of a minor basilica. To understand the chronology, it is worth distinguishing between the time of construction and the later ecclesiastical honor: the elevation in 1973 belongs to the church’s later history, not to its construction.

Urban Layout and Historic Attractions

The historic character of the urban layout has been preserved to this day; the development around several market squares is part of this picture. A conservation protection zone was designated on the basis of two decisions dated November 24, 1956, and February 23, 1979. It encompasses the preserved historic urban layout and the most valuable historic buildings within it. When exploring, you can therefore distinguish between two levels: the continuous urban layout and individual attractions such as the figure and chapel of Saint Agatha.

The dates also refer to different historical periods: 1563 marks the founding, 1706 the completion of work on the monastery, and 1956 and 1979 the decisions to designate the protection zone. This chronological distinction helps to consider the town’s history, the history of its buildings and later heritage conservation separately. The decisions date the designation of the zone, not the creation of the preserved urban layout.
