Hajnówka: Exhibitions, Miniatures and Trails
Accommodation in Hajnówka
Hajnówka offers a cultural focus on folklore and architectural miniatures. The wider Hajnowski destination also includes landscapes, trails and other cultural themes. This lets you incorporate your interests in exhibitions, architecture, forests and regional history into your travel plans.
Culture and Architecture in Hajnówka
The Museum and Cultural Centre of the Belarusian Minority in Hajnówka features three permanent exhibitions on folklore and rural life in Podlachia: “Dzień za dniem”, “Zanim chleb położono na stole” and “Życia zgodny chód”. The exhibitions take different approaches to these themes. Their descriptions are intended to be permanent; individual displays may change.
The Park Miniatur Zabytków Podlasia focuses on architecture. It features detailed miniatures of religious buildings, including Orthodox and Catholic churches, as well as palaces and wooden buildings. The models are made to a scale of 1:25. A plaque beside each model provides information about the history of the building depicted and related features. This means that Hajnówka offers two distinct perspectives side by side: insights into folklore and architecture in miniature.
Landscapes in the Wider Hajnowski Destination
The Białowieża Forest is the largest forest complex in Hajnowski County and is considered Europe’s best-preserved lowland forest in the deciduous and mixed forest zone. The Białowieża National Park is located within this forest area, in Hajnowski County. It covers 10.5 thousand hectares and was established in 1921. These details present the national park as a distinct topic within the wider Hajnowski destination.
Trails and Visitor Information
The “Kraina Puszczy i Żubra” Nordic Walking Park has seven marked routes in Hajnówka, equipped with maps and ranging from 3 to 21 kilometres. The stated starting points are the water park in Hajnówka and the “Zwierzyniec” car park on Voivodeship Road 689 between Hajnówka and Białowieża. One of the routes is the “Pętla Żubra”: it is listed as 15 kilometres long, with a walking time of about three hours. This duration is an estimate; trail conditions and times may vary seasonally. Check the latest trail information and the accessibility of the starting points before setting off.
Individual visitors to Białowieża National Park can walk the “Carska Tropina”, “Wilczy Szlak”, “Wokół Uroczyska Głuszec” and “Tropem Żubra” trails, as well as the “Przez trzy zbiorowiska” educational trail, without a guide. The “Do Dębu Jagiełły” trail is different: it passes through a strictly protected area and may only be walked with a tourist guide licensed by the park director. Check the park’s current trail and guiding rules before your visit.
Crafts, Music and Remembrance
The Museum of Blacksmithing and Locksmithing in Hajnówka grew out of a family forge founded in 1927 and has 586 exhibits. Blacksmithing demonstrations are available by prior arrangement; visitors can try striking red-hot iron with a hammer themselves. Advance arrangements are important if you plan to visit for this experience.
The Museum and Cultural Centre of Belarusians in Hajnówka organises craft and art workshops, as well as the recurring ethnographic festivals “Kultura na schodach muzeum” and “I tam żywuć ludzi”. Check the programmes and dates with the museum in advance. Since 2002, the International Festival Hajnowskie Dni Muzyki Cerkiewnej has also been held as a week-long competition at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Hajnówka. Check the dates of the current edition if you would like to include the festival in your plans.
The Szlak Pamięci Hajnówki leads to traces of past cultures and events that have shaped Hajnówka and its residents. The Polish- and English-language audio guide for the Hajnówka tourist narrow-gauge railway offers another way to explore regional themes. It covers the railway, the Białowieża Forest and the forest settlement of Topiło. The audio guide may change, so check its availability before your trip.
