Żyrardów brings together the history of the linen industry, museums, a historic interior and varied landscapes. You can use these themes to plan your stay: the history of the factory and factory settlement sits alongside Miejski Park and the bathing area at Zalew Żyrardowski. A walk along the Industrial Heritage Trail complements your visits with a route exploring the factory’s importance and the working and living conditions of the local community.

The Linen Industry and Factory Settlement

The Filip de Girard Linen Museum presents Żyrardów’s linen-making traditions, which date back to 1829. They are linked to the development of the linen industry and the Linen Products Factory, described as Europe’s most productive centre of the linen industry. The history of the place thus leads from a long textile tradition to the factory closely associated with it.

Old looms are among the exhibition’s most vivid features. After the decline of the Zakłady Lniarskie, they were brought back into operation; today, they are run for demonstration purposes during the summer season. These demonstrations are seasonal. When planning your visit around a particular theme, you can therefore distinguish between the permanent focus on the history of linen and the summer demonstrations.

The collection at the Museum of Western Mazovia preserves another view of the factory settlement: a panoramic watercolour from 1899. Measuring 140 × 367 cm, the work was commissioned by the owners of the Żyrardów Works for the World’s Fair in Paris and depicts the settlement from above. The museum also explores the history of Żyrardów, its textile mills and the traditional material culture of the city’s residents. A permanent gallery is dedicated to the works of Józef Rapacki.

The Resursa and Historic Interiors

At the Resursa, a distinctive interior is combined with Żyrardów’s cultural history. Its ballroom features rich gilding and colourful murals; it is designed in the Renaissance style with Neoclassical elements. Originally, this cultural institution, modelled on English clubs, was reserved for the local elite. Following its restoration, it regained its former splendour and is once again a lively centre of cultural life. Żyrardów’s Tourist and Cultural Information Centre is also based at the Resursa.

The Park and Bathing Area

Karol August Dittrich Miejski Park is a green space of almost 6 ha in the centre of Żyrardów, in the residential district of the factory settlement. Its gently contoured terrain and naturalistic water system with numerous bridges give the park its distinctive landscape character. This landscaped green space thus sits alongside the city’s industrial and cultural themes.

The bathing area at Zalew Żyrardowski includes a 750 m² sandy beach and supervised swimming areas. Seasonal opening may vary. When planning your visit, it is worth taking the swimming season into account rather than assuming the area can be used at any time of year.

Plan a Walk along the Industrial Heritage Trail

A walk along the “Industrial Żyrardów” Industrial Architecture Trail takes about two hours, provided you do not plan any additional visits to interiors. This estimate applies to the walk itself; interior visits may take extra time. The route explores the importance of the Żyrardów factory and the working and living conditions of the local community during the city’s dynamic industrial development.

You can plan your stay around a range of themes: linen-making traditions and machinery, a historic panorama, the Resursa, the park or the bathing area. The walk has its own time frame and offers a way to explore the city’s industrial history. You can decide which themes to combine based on the time available and your interests.
