A stay in Wieliszew brings together lakeside scenery, outdoor activities and historic sites. The landscape around Lake Wieliszewskie, activities on the water and historic memorials offer different reasons to choose the area. You can decide whether to focus mainly on the scenery, a particular route, or cultural and historical impressions.

Scenery and outdoor activities

Wieliszew lies on the escarpment overlooking Lake Wieliszewskie. The lake is a remnant of a former meander of the Narew; a meander is a bend in a river. From the escarpment, there is a beautiful view of the lake and the meadows below. The landscape’s history is thus linked to a scenic viewpoint, distinct from the sporting activities on the water.

The area around Lake Wieliszewskie can be explored by bicycle or on horseback. There is also a stud farm right by the lake. A more precisely described option for cyclists and inline skaters runs along the Zegrze Reservoir: the paved route is one kilometre long and is closed to cars. Many cyclists and inline skaters use it. This offers two distinct possibilities: exploring the area around Lake Wieliszewskie and following a clearly defined stretch along the Zegrze Reservoir.

Beach and events

The beach in Wieliszew is one of the largest on the lake and was modernised in 2013. Its facilities include barbecue areas, a playground, a pier and toilets. As facilities can change, check before your visit if needed to confirm that the amenities you care about are currently available.

A regional tourism overview published in 2025 also lists the beach as an event venue. Events include the Amatorskie Mistrzostwa Zalewu Zegrzyńskiego w Siatkówce Plażowej (Amateur Zegrze Reservoir Beach Volleyball Championships), film screenings, concerts, children’s events and family competitions. Also listed are the Wieliszewski Festiwal Folkowo-Szantowy „Szanty nad Zalewem“, qualifying rounds for the „Złoty Pagaj“ competition, and a children’s game featuring the mascots of the Komisariat Rzeczny Policji (River Police Station), Kapitan Wyderki, titled „Bezpieczeństwo nad Jeziorem Zegrzyńskim“ (Safety on Lake Zegrzyńskie). The programme may change; if an event is important to your trip, check the latest dates.

Another festival takes place during Midsummer Night (Sobótka): „Wieliszewskie Wianki“ in Świętojański Park on Lake Wieliszewskie. In 2025, the festival took place on 21 and 22 June; it was announced for the weekend of 20–21 June 2026.

Local history and remembrance

A precisely dated church reference goes back to 20 July 1387: on that day, the Bishop of Płock, Ścibor of Radzymin, ordered the construction of a church in Wieliszew on the estate of the Canons Regular of Czerwińsk nad Wisłą, in a foundation charter. There is also an observation tower by the parish church of the Transfiguration.

A large Neoclassical cemetery chapel stands in the cemetery in Wieliszew, bearing the inscription „Żona Mężowi“ (“A Wife to Her Husband”). Maria Gautier funded it in 1834; she was the wife of the then owner of the village and estate of Wieliszew. The cemetery also contains a military cemetery. Around 300 Polish soldiers are buried there, most of them members of the 5th Infantry Division, who defended the crossing over the Narew in September 1939. The chapel connects a personal dedication with the area’s 19th-century history, while the military cemetery commemorates the battles of 1939.
