Zegrze Południowe: Waterfront Loop, Cycling Routes and Fortress History

Zegrze Południowe combines a historic barracks complex with cycling routes and activities on the water. The large waterfront loop on Lake Zegrze is 37.6 kilometres long; Zegrze Południowe lies along this route. There is a fishing landing stage on ul. Rybaki, as well as a marina belonging to the Warszawskie Towarzystwo Wioślarskie. For planning purposes, this distinguishes the named water route from the specific landing stages in the town.

Cycling routes and possible nature observations

Two named cycling routes pass through Zegrze Południowe. The Trasa obwodowa runs through Dębe, Poddębie, Sikory and Góra. The Trasa narwiańska continues from Zegrze Południowe via Borowa Góra, Serock, Łacha and Gąsiorowo. A total length of 37.6 kilometres is given for the waterfront loop; on the cycling routes, you can use the listed places along the way as points of reference.

The circular cycling route can include birdwatching on the Narew Terrace and observing beaver activity at the mouth of the Kanał Komornicki where it meets the Narew as possible elements of your trip.

Barracks and fortress history

The barracks complex in Zagroby was built between 1891 and 1897. The barracks are among the best-preserved historic monuments in Zegrze Południowe and were an integral part of Zegrze Fortress. Their history is therefore closely linked to the fortress, giving the town a different focus from its water and cycling activities.

One converted building in the complex also serves a present-day purpose: the Nieporęt Commune Library has a branch in Barracks Casino No. 14 in Zegrze Południowe. The place thus combines the historic significance of the barracks with a library branch in one of the converted buildings.
