Żelechów: Church, Art and Local History
Accommodation in Żelechów
When looking for a hotel for a trip to Żelechów, you can consider which subjects interest you most: architectural and art history, the connection to painter Józef Chełmoński, or a cycling route. Local connections range from a church in the town center to landscape motifs in the surrounding area. This lets you choose your destination based on a specific interest.
Church and Art History
At the center of Żelechów stands the single-nave brick Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The building was constructed in the mid-16th century in the Late Gothic style. “Single-nave” describes a floor plan with one main nave and thus refers to the building’s design. The interior is furnished in the Renaissance and Baroque styles. This brings Late Gothic architecture and furnishings from different styles together in one building.
The high altar dates from 1771. The church also contains the Renaissance tombstone of the knight Kacper Miński, dated to approximately 1570–1580. The two dates refer to different historical periods: the tombstone is placed roughly in the second half of the 16th century, while the year 1771 is given for the high altar. Those interested in the development of ecclesiastical art can distinguish the architectural design, interior furnishings, and individual historical works here.
Józef Chełmoński and Żelechów
The town’s history is also connected to the painter Józef Chełmoński. He visited Żelechów frequently and found landscape motifs for his paintings in the surrounding area. The two connections differ in location: his frequent visits were to Żelechów, while he found the landscape motifs in its surroundings. On April 8, 1914, a funeral service for Chełmoński was held in the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. His grave is in the parish cemetery in Żelechów. He lived in nearby Kuklówka. His visits, paintings, funeral service, and grave thus provide different historical points of connection rather than telling just one episode.
Wayside Shrine and Cycling Route
Another point of interest is the stone wayside shrine with a figure of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from the 17th century. As a wayside shrine, it differs from the church as a building; here, the figure is the main focus. Together with the Late Gothic church and the works inside it, the shrine adds another object and its own date to Żelechów’s history of religious art.
For a cycling trip, a 35-kilometer route runs via Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Siestrzeń, Młochów, and Żelechów, and then back to Grodzisk Mazowiecki. Żelechów is therefore part of a circular route with a total length of 35 kilometers. For navigation, bear in mind that signage and route information are inconsistent; check the route information before setting out. The cycling route offers a different way to experience Żelechów from the themes focused on the church and local history.
