Gubin offers a variety of cultural and historical points of interest for a stay: a museum chamber, historic buildings, the Theatre Island and a cycling route to the former Albert Koenig Park. If you are looking for a hotel in Gubin, these themes can help you decide what brings you here: would you like to visit the museum chamber or plan a 21-kilometre bike ride? The following places differ in age and character, giving you specific starting points for your plans.

Museum Chamber and City History

The museum chamber of the Friends of the Gubin Region Association was established in 2004 at the initiative of its members. Its artefacts are divided into six thematic areas: prehistory, city history, applied art, places, honorary citizens of Gubin and “Our City”. This brings together a range of perspectives: early history, artistic objects and local themes. Visiting hours are listed as Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 10:00 to 14:30. Check the current opening hours locally before your visit.

Square, Bridge and Architectural Changes

The paved św. Jana Pawła II Square covers 0.3 hectares and is located in the historic centre of Gubin, next to the Renaissance town hall and the Gothic parish church. The two buildings represent different architectural styles and stand right next to one another here. The square therefore provides a clear reference point for viewing the city’s historic architecture.

The Maiden’s Bridge is a small bridge from the city’s Renaissance period. It is located at the roundabout where Piastowska and Roosevelt streets meet. Two dates mark the bridge’s architectural history: in 1843, the wooden bridge was rebuilt and widened; in 1907, a simple stone structure with wrought-iron railings replaced the wooden construction. The change from wood to stone makes the bridge’s successive building phases easy to trace.

Theatre Island and Historical Testimony

The park on Theatre Island is located on a river island near the confluence of the Lubsza and the Lusatian Neisse and forms part of the cross-border Green Trail. Its features include a monument to the former city theatre, two sculptures and natural monuments. The theatre opened in 1874 with Goethe’s “Faust” and was destroyed in 1945. A reconstructed entrance façade, built in the 20th century with original columns and stone steps, serves as a symbol of the former building.

Another historical testimony is the monument to Corona Schröter, an opera singer and actress from Gubin, unveiled in 1905. The monument is only partially preserved. Together with the entrance façade, it points to different aspects of theatre history: the former building and a performing artist associated with Gubin. If you include the Green Trail in your plans, check route conditions locally.

City Fortifications and Cycling Route

Ostrowska Gate Tower was built around 1530 during the modernisation works carried out from 1523 to 1544. It is the best-preserved element of the medieval city fortifications in the Eurocity of Guben-Gubin. The tower is not open to visitors and can only be viewed from the outside.

The former Albert Koenig Park offers a different, landscape-focused connection to the city’s history. It covered 25 hectares and was rich in trees. It was named after its benefactor, a respected founder and owner of a local daily newspaper, publishing house and printing works. A 21-kilometre cycling route in the Eurocity of Guben-Gubin leads to this former park. It also follows the western bank of the Neisse, near the ruins of a bridge between Guben’s former industrial area and its villa district. Check route conditions locally before setting out.
