Wojciechów: Discover Blacksmithing and Trails
Accommodation in Wojciechów
When planning a trip to Wojciechów, the marked routes can be easily distinguished by type and length; the historic character of the village is particularly focused on blacksmithing around the Wieża Ariańska. You can first decide whether a roughly one-hour loop, a longer hiking or cycling route, or a cultural focus is a better fit for your stay.
Choosing a hiking or cycling route by distance
The green Nordic walking loop starts in Wojciechów, is 4 kilometres long and takes about an hour. Its length and approximate duration give you a concrete idea of what to expect from this loop. Two longer routes, which also pass through Wojciechów, are different: the red-marked western highland trail is a 60-kilometre hiking route from Kazimierz Dolny to Lublin. The red-marked Lublin–Kazimierz Dolny cycling route also passes through Wojciechów and is 62 kilometres long.
The total lengths of the hiking and cycling routes are similar; the main difference is the activity and the specified route. Together with the roughly one-hour Nordic walking loop, they offer a choice between a loop with an estimated duration and two longer routes designated as hiking and cycling routes, respectively.
Blacksmithing around the Wieża Ariańska
The Wieża Ariańska is a defensive and residential building commissioned by J. Pilecki, the Starost of Lublin, between 1520 and 1530. The tower houses the Muzeum Kowalstwa, described as Poland’s only blacksmithing museum. This brings together architectural history and blacksmithing. The Aleja Zasłużonych Kowali is next to the Wieża Ariańska. It opened in 2019 and is decorated with a series of railings made as part of an artistic blacksmithing competition.
Another historic building is the late-Baroque wooden Church of St. Theodore, built in 1725. This allows you to compare two different construction periods: the Wieża Ariańska, built between 1520 and 1530, and the church, built in 1725.
Workshop, themed trail and gallery
A visit to Kuźnia Romana Czernieca includes a tour of a workshop where agricultural equipment is repaired, horses are shod, and decorative metalwork is hand-forged. In Wojciechów, the Szlak Ginących Zawodów connects the Muzeum Kowalstwa and Kuźnia Romana Czernieca; the route includes a horseshoe-forging demonstration.
The gallery next to the forge offers another way to explore the blacksmith’s work: you can view his creations there and buy lucky horseshoes and other products. The workshop tour, horseshoe forging and gallery each highlight a different aspect of blacksmithing.
A destination nearby
On the outskirts of Wojciechów, nearby, lies the four-hectare ZOO Wojciechów. It is home to several dozen exotic animal species, including lions, pumas, kangaroos, camels, donkeys, llamas and alpacas, as well as various species of goats and sheep and numerous water and land birds. There is a large playground for children. The grounds also include a spacious rest area with tables and benches, as well as a fire pit. Unlike the architectural and craft attractions, this is a place focused on animal species and places to relax.
