Łęczna is a good choice for a trip that brings together a historic park and tangible traces of the city’s past. Podzamcze reflects designed landscapes and the estate’s former use, while the town hall, synagogue and former inns lead to different chapters in local history. The fairs and an annual music festival also offer distinctive points of interest for your trip.

Podzamcze: Park and Estate

The Podzamcze estate and park lie on a hill at the confluence of the Świnka and the Wieprz. Their design combines elements of an 18th-century Italian garden with a 19th-century landscape park. If you are interested in designed landscapes, you can see two phases of garden and park design in a single ensemble, rather than focusing your visit on just one building.

Paved paths and squares provide access to the former estate grounds. There is also an outdoor fitness area in the eastern part of the park. Both the paths through the former estate grounds and the area for exercise help shape the character of Podzamcze. These features appeal to different interests without detracting from the historic park design.

An observation tower with a terrace ten metres above ground is located in a building formerly used for drying hops. The building’s former function gives the tower its own historical context within the estate. Together with the garden and park features, it creates a point of interest that connects landscape history with the use of the estate grounds.

Fairs and Historic Buildings in Łęczna

The origins of the town of Łęczna date back to 1467. When it was granted town rights, it also received the right to hold fairs. This history is reflected in the former inns: the buildings at ul. 3 Maja 26 and 37, and pl. Kanałowy 18 and 26, are surviving examples of 19th-century architecture from the heyday of fairs in Łęczna.

A present-day link to this tradition is the international Festiwal Kapel Ulicznych i Podwórkowych. It takes place in Łęczna every year on the last weekend of July. If you would like to plan your trip around the music festival, check the date of that year’s edition before making plans; the recurring weekend schedule does not replace checking the specific event date.

The town hall also tells a story about the city’s architectural history: it stands on Plac Kościuszki in the northeastern part of Rynek I and was originally built as a guardhouse at the end of the 19th century. The Duża Synagogue is another historic landmark. It was largely destroyed during and after the war, then rebuilt between 1953 and 1964. The two buildings thus represent different aspects of local history, while the former inns recall Łęczna’s fairground era.
