Bogdanka can be explored through two distinct themes: the mining history of the Lublin Coal Basin and a Protestant chapel in the village. Mining is the focus of Zone C at the headquarters of Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka S.A. The chapel dates from the early 20th century. When planning your visit, it is important to distinguish between the educational offerings in Zone C and a visit to the mine’s above-ground facilities.

Mining in Zone C: Themes and Perspectives

The specially designed themed rooms cover mining traditions, miners’ clothing, the history of the mine, and various methods of coal extraction. In the first room, a model depicts the entire complex, with its three mining fields and the surrounding area. This places topics from everyday working life alongside a spatial representation of the mine. If you are especially interested in the structure of the complex, the model offers a different perspective from the explanations of traditions and clothing.

Further insights are provided by a film about miners’ everyday work with specialized machinery and coal extraction, as well as a room containing memorabilia, awards, and historical symbols. These items were collected over several decades. Mining legends are also part of the offering, including the story of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners. The topics thus range from work practices and history to the stories associated with mining.

The third room contains a replica of an underground tunnel and a coal cart. In complete darkness, with the lights switched off, it creates the impression of a miner working one kilometer underground. This room offers a different focus from the overview of themes in the first room: here, the tunnel replica, the cart, and the darkness take center stage instead of the model and contextual information.

During one-hour courses, organized preschool and school groups learn more about miners’ work underground, the more than 40-year history of hard-coal mining in the Lublin Coal Basin, and forward-looking solutions from Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka S.A. The duration and intended audience give groups a clear framework for planning. Mining lessons and workshops are also held in Zone C.

Another Local Point of Interest

In addition to the mining theme, the village of Bogdanka is home to a Protestant chapel from the early 20th century. It provides a different historical and religious perspective from the mine’s themed rooms. So, when choosing Bogdanka as a destination, you can consider whether you are primarily interested in the history and working life of mining, or whether you would also like to include the chapel in your exploration of the place.

Planning Visits and Applications

To arrange an educational visit to Zone C, applications must be sent by email to strefac@lw.com.pl together with the “Information Clause about Image Processing.” If you would like to extend your visit to include the mine’s above-ground facilities, an application must be submitted to the management of Lubelski Węgiel Bogdanka S.A. School pupils and university students may take part in this extended visit; approval from the senior mine management is required. Take this additional application and approval into account when planning your group visit.
