Grabanów brings together manor house history, park design and a natural river boundary. If you are looking for a hotel in Grabanów, these features can help guide your choice of location: historical references span from the 16th century to buildings from the 1920s and 1930s; they are joined by the landscape park and the Klukówka, which forms a boundary with Biała Podlaska. History, architectural forms and landscape each offer their own focus.

Manor house and historical references

Grabanów, also formerly known as Grabianów, was owned by the Ilinicz and Kiszk families in the 16th century. In 1522, Grabanów was mentioned as an endowment of St. Anne’s Church in Biała, founded by Jerzy Iwanowicz Ilinicz. In 1714, the manor house was expanded and a pheasantry was established; both were given a unified Baroque composition. The church endowment and the later design of the manor house and pheasantry thus stand alongside one another as distinct historical references.

Near the manor house stands a wooden Czworak dating from the second half of the 19th century. To the west of the manor house are two brick outbuildings from the 1920s and 1930s: a stable and a coach house. The Czworak is therefore older than the stable and coach house; wood and brickwork also distinguish the three buildings. Their locations offer another point of reference: the Czworak stands near the manor house, while the stable and coach house are to its west. Together, the names and construction dates illustrate different building types and historical layers around the manor house.

A monument in the park commemorates participants in the Bar Confederation and the Kościuszko, November, January and Warsaw uprisings, as well as participants in the Second World War. This commemoration spans several periods of uprisings and war, adding a distinct layer of remembrance to the manor house’s architectural history.

Park design and landscape

The landscape park has been preserved and probably dates from after 1860. Its paths run axially and radially, although in some places they are now only faintly discernible. A long driveway once ran along an embankment between ponds. Also preserved are an oval forecourt and, southeast of the manor house, a clearly defined garden area with a semicircular end, enclosed by rows of hornbeams and ash trees. The oval and semicircular forms contrast with the axial and radial path lines, placing different shapes and directions side by side. Axial paths follow an axis; radial paths extend like spokes.

The 32-kilometre-long Klukówka forms a natural boundary between Biała Podlaska and Grabanów. The Szlak dawnych cerkwi i dworów (Trail of Former Orthodox Churches and Manor Houses) passes through Grabanów. The river boundary and the route create different spatial connections: the Klukówka positions Grabanów in relation to Biała Podlaska, while the route incorporates the area into its course.
