Nowy Kościół: Geology, Local History and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Nowy Kościół
Nowy Kościół brings together geological and historical points of interest: the sandstone outcrops in the Kaczawa Valley, the park of the former Zedlitz estate and the tower of a Romanesque church ruin. There is also the red-marked Agatowa Loop, which passes through several places. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can first decide whether to focus on geology, local history or a cycling route. These themes offer different reasons to explore Nowy Kościół.
Sandstone and Earth’s History in the Kaczawa Valley
The sandstone outcrops in the Kaczawa Valley near Nowy Kościół document a depositional environment from the Late Permian. A depositional environment is the setting in which material was deposited; the outcrops therefore point to the history of the rock’s formation. This geological connection is quite distinct from the town’s architectural and cultural-history points of interest. While the estate and the church ruin evoke human history, the sandstone takes us much further back in geological time. For visitors interested in geology, this shift in scale offers a distinct focus among the town’s points of interest.
The Former Zedlitz Estate
In the center of Nowy Kościół is the park of the former Zedlitz estate, where remarkable trees grow. The estate’s palace was once a castle, but almost nothing remains of it. The sequence of castle and later palace provides a historical anchor, while the remarkable trees characterize the estate through its park. The architectural history and the park therefore offer two different ways to explore local history.
There is also an English oak on Kolejowa Street in Nowy Kościół, described as the thickest in the municipality of Świerzawa. This distinction refers to the tree’s thickness and to the municipality. Together with the remarkable trees in the central park, the oak offers a different kind of connection with nature: here, a single tree described in relation to the municipality; there, trees belonging to the former estate.
Cycling the Agatowa Loop
The red-marked Agatowa Loop passes through Świerzawa, Gozdno, Biegoszów, Nowy Kościół, Sokołowiec, Rząśnik, Orzechowice and Lubiechowa before returning to Świerzawa. In this sequence of places, Nowy Kościół is part of the loop, while Świerzawa appears at both the beginning and the end. The cycling route thus places the town within a circuit with several stops, making it different from themes focused on individual points of interest. If you are considering cycling the loop, check in advance whether the red markings are up to date.
Visiting Hours for the Church Tower
The tower of the Romanesque church ruin in Nowy Kościół can be visited at certain times. Before your visit, check whether it is currently open to visitors.
