Przecznica is closely connected with its mining history. The former “Św. Maria-Anna” cobalt ore mine, visible traces of earlier work and the open-air mining trail offer different ways to explore this subject. At the same time, the landscape places the village in a broad hollow at the foot of the Jizera Mountains and along the Kwisa River. If you are considering Przecznica as a travel destination, you can view its local history, the mining history of the surrounding area and the landscape as different perspectives.

Mining history in the village and surrounding area

The former “Św. Maria-Anna” cobalt ore mine was in operation from 1769 to 1840. Depressions marking three shafts are visible there. In addition, traces of earlier mining work in the form of adits remain visible in Przecznica. Thus, the visible depressions of a particular mine sit alongside other traces of earlier work in the village.

The development of Przecznica was strongly influenced by the creation of a large mining and smelting site in Przecznica and Gierczyn. Cobalt and tin ore deposits were discovered in the area around the destination in the mid-16th century. By 1616, 17 adits had been created there. These early discoveries and adits belong to the history of the wider area; by contrast, the operating period of “Św. Maria-Anna” refers to a later-dated phase of a particular mine. The shift between these time periods and geographical scales gives the mining history its broader context.

The open-air mining trail

The “Śladami dawnego górnictwa kruszców” mining trail leads from the valley of Krobicki Potok to Przecznicki Potok. It runs along the Kamienicki Ridge at its lowest section, crosses the Dzieża stream and ends in Przecznica. The route thus takes in a sequence of different geographical features: two valleys, a section along the ridge and a stream crossing before reaching the village.

In 2024, the municipality of Mirsk commissioned maintenance of the open-air trail and had all its signage replaced. If you are planning to use the trail for a specific outing, it is advisable to check its current condition and accessibility in advance.

Landscape and bat conservation

The broad hollow at the foot of the Jizera Mountains and the Kwisa River shape the geographical setting of Przecznica. The mining history and the landscape offer different points of reference: the depressions and adits point to earlier work, while the mountains and river describe the village’s location.

Protecting bat habitats is also part of the story of these mining sites. The entrances to “Fryderyk Wilhelm,” “Św. Maria-Anna” and “Trzech Braci” are secured with openable gates made of galvanized steel pipes. The protective measure therefore applies to all three named entrances and connects the built mining heritage with the protection of bat habitats.

A culinary link to history

“Przecznicki Camembert” cheese is also known as a local product associated with Przecznica. As a culinary link to history, it offers a different emphasis from the mining remains and adds another traditional connection to the cultural picture of the village.
