Grudza: Church, Historic Houses and Hiking Trail
Accommodation in Grudza
Grudza brings together several distinct themes for a stay: the Church of the Name of Mary, with its architectural history; historic village houses; the ruins of a windmill once used as a viewing tower; and a yellow hiking trail that reaches the village. There is also a viewpoint, an outdoor fitness area, and views of the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether to focus more on architecture, village history, landscape or exercise.
Church of the Name of Mary: Architectural History and Furnishings
The parish Church of the Name of Mary dates back to the Late Gothic period. Its present form took shape between 1765 and 1768, when it was extensively remodeled in the late Baroque style or largely rebuilt. Its architectural history thus spans an earlier phase of church construction and the defining form it took in the 18th century. If you are interested in sacred architecture, you can take in both its origins and its later development here.
The furnishings also bring together several stylistic features. The high altar includes the Madonna and Child and an antependium dating from 1776. There is also a Rococo altarpiece surround and a Rococo pulpit, Baroque side altars and an organ case. A stone baptismal font from the 17th century and oil paintings from the 18th century complete the furnishings; the church also has a sail vault. These features offer different points of interest in the altar, pulpit, vault and paintings.
When planning a visit, distinguish between the exterior and interior. A heritage listing dated 21 January 2019 describes the exterior as accessible without restriction; it states that the interior is accessible only during services. If you would like to see the interior, contact the parish before your visit.
Village Architecture, Windmill and Landscape
Grudza has around 50 historic houses, including houses built in the regionally characteristic przysłupowy style. Alongside the parish church, this group of historic homes forms a distinct architectural point of interest. The term przysłupowy refers to the construction style of these houses and gives the village architecture a specific regional character.
The ruins of a windmill are another historic feature of the village. Before the Second World War, the mill served as a viewing tower. Grudza also has a viewpoint. From Grudza, you can see the Jizera Mountains and the Giant Mountains. The history of a former structure and the village’s landscape views thus offer two distinct themes.
Hiking Trail and Exercise
The yellow Rybnica–Stóg Izerski hiking trail passes through Janice on its way to Grudza, reaching the village on the Przedgórze Rębiszowskie. In Grudza, it continues along a road open to vehicles. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The named places provide clear waypoints along the route, while the road reference describes its course through the village.
Grudza also has an outdoor fitness area. For travel planning, there are different ways to stay active: a named hiking route that reaches the village and a sports facility in the village. Which suits your stay depends on whether you want to include a hiking route or are looking for a fitness area on site.
