Anyone interested in historic buildings and their distinct periods will find several points of interest in Naumburg Am Queis. Their features range from Baroque forms and surviving architectural elements to dated memorials; at the tower, its architectural model and building materials are defining features. Depending on your interests, you can focus on the monastery’s architecture, the construction of the town hall and tower, or the dated works in the church.
Monastery ruins: architecture and memorials
The ruins of the Monastery of the Sisters of Saint Mary Magdalene display Baroque forms and elaborate stone window tracery, particularly on the north facade. Inside, parts of various barrel and stone vaults, as well as several memorial tomb slabs from the 17th century, have been preserved. The stone tracery defines the exterior, while the vaults and tomb slabs point to surviving interior details. A barrel vault describes primarily a form of vaulting, whereas the term stone vault refers to the material. The two terms thus highlight different architectural features. During restoration work, the inner main wall of the cloister courtyard was also revitalized.
Town hall and observation tower: construction history and materials
The fundamental reconstruction of the town hall was led in 1795 by master mason Menzel from Bolesławiec and carpenter Anton Zugehoer. The town hall’s reconstruction date and the tradespeople involved shape its construction history; the tower, by contrast, is defined by its architectural model and materials. The observation tower is modeled on a medieval castle complex and built of local sandstone and bricks. Its resemblance to the castle complex describes its design, while sandstone and bricks are the specific building materials. The tower was once surrounded by a wooden restaurant structure. To visit, please contact the town office by phone in advance to check availability. The town hall’s reconstruction in 1795 took place shortly after the church’s furnishing from 1788 to 1793.
Church of Saints Peter and Paul: artworks from different periods
The Catholic Church of Saints Peter and Paul acquired its present Late Baroque appearance through a complete new build and was furnished between 1788 and 1793. Older furnishings include a Renaissance epitaph for Matternus Olbricht dating from 1586. It depicts the deceased with his family worshipping the Holy Cross. A plaque from 1542 bears the monogram “MR” and the inscription “VDMIE.” The plaque from 1542 is older than the 1586 epitaph; both works predate the church’s furnishing from 1788 to 1793. In terms of subject matter, the objects emphasize different aspects: the epitaph depicts a family scene with a religious reference, while the plaque is distinguished by its monogram and inscription.
