The medieval fortification walls of Wieluń were approximately 1,200 to 1,300 metres long. This gives an initial impression of the scale of the historic fortifications. The original structures included two gates: the Kaliskie Gate, also known as the Dąbrowska Gate, stood in the west, and the Krakowska Gate, also known as the Rudzka Gate, stood in the east. Each gate is known by two names. Together with their western and eastern locations, these details provide a concrete introduction to the layout of the medieval fortifications.

City History at Baszta Męczarnia

The exhibition “W izbie wieluńskiego kata” at Baszta Męczarnia explores the history of Wieluń’s executioners and their workshop. Its subject takes you from the people to their working environment, giving it a distinctive place in the city’s history. Baszta Męczarnia can be visited Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm after purchasing an admission ticket at the museum. Check visitor information before your trip, as visitor arrangements may change.

Following the Narrow-Gauge Railway Trail

The trail following the Wieluń narrow-gauge railway combines physical activity with a historical theme. Within the Wieluń municipality, it includes a surfaced section of more than four kilometres. This section is intended for cyclists, walkers, horse riders and roller skaters. Along the trail, information boards tell the history of the railway and display historical photographs. This makes it possible to discover the route through its former use, rather than seeing it only as a link for different ways of getting around.

There are two tourist service points along the trail, with tables, benches and toilets. These facilities may change over time, so check the information before setting out. The surfaced section, its length and the listed uses give you concrete points to consider when deciding whether the trail suits your plans. The information boards and photographs add a glimpse into the history of the Wieluń narrow-gauge railway to the journey.

Parks Between City History and Nature

Miejski Park im. Żwirki i Wigury was established in 1852 to a design by district engineer Karol Brochocki. It was laid out on the site of a former moat and fortification walls, between today’s Śląska and Krakowskie Przedmieście streets, along Piłsudskiego Street. Its history links the park to Wieluń’s former fortifications. Those interested in how the cityscape developed will find a concrete historical connection here between a green space and the site’s earlier use.

Lasek Miejski is a forest park north of Wojska Polskiego Street. Its main axis is a walking avenue parallel to the street. The Wieluński Botanical Garden was established on ten hectares of Lasek Miejski between 1998 and 2000. This brings together two distinct names for the area: the forest park and the botanical garden. Miejski Park and Lasek Miejski offer different landscape features, while their names each reveal a different aspect of Wieluń’s green spaces.

The “Lasek Kurowski” nature reserve offers another natural highlight. It was established on 24 November 1983 and protects natural oak-hornbeam stands with firs, as well as alder carr and alder floodplain forest. The focus here is on protecting specifically named types of vegetation. This sets the area apart from landscaped parks and makes clear that Wieluń’s green spaces do not all have the same character.
