The Sulejów Reservoir and the Cistercian monastery complex in Sulejów provide two clear focal points in Piotrków County: activities on the water and architectural history. The county also offers natural areas, horse-riding activities and regional culture. When planning your hotel stay, it is worth deciding first which of these interests will shape your visit.

Monastic History and Architecture

The Cistercian monastery complex in Sulejów was recognised as a Monument of History of Poland by a decree of the President of the Republic of Poland dated 22 October 2012. The abbey is among Poland’s most valuable architectural monuments and is of great artistic, historical and scientific significance. In Sulejów Podklasztorze, the historic Cistercian Route and the historic Piast Romanesque Route meet.

Other buildings offer different historical highlights. The Bishop’s Palace in Wolbórz was built between 1768 and 1773 in the late Baroque style as a summer residence for the Bishops of Kuyavia. In Skotniki stands the wooden Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in 1528. The larch-wood church, with its wooden bell tower, is listed in the voivodeship register of monuments and is of significance beyond the region. In Witów, the remains of the former Premonstratensian abbey, founded in 1179, include a Baroque church and a historic 15th-century gate tower.

Reservoirs, the Pilica and Nature

The Sulejów Reservoir is an artificial reservoir on the Pilica and attracts watersports enthusiasts and visitors seeking recreation and nature. Windsurfing, kayaking and sailing are all possible there. The reservoir is also surrounded by numerous recreation centres, swimming areas and walking trails. The Pilica forms the natural axis of Piotrków County; a 45-kilometre stretch of the river can be explored by kayak.

For cyclists, the Zygmunt Goliat trail runs along the Sulejów Reservoir. Within the municipality of Sulejów, it is about 15 kilometres long. The Cieszanowice Reservoir offers a different natural highlight: covering 260 hectares, it is an important recreational area and also a habitat for rare birds. These include the common tern, little tern and Kentish plover.

The Jodły Lubiaszów Nature Reserve lies in the southern part of the municipality of Wolbórz, near Lubiaszów, and covers 202.4 hectares. It protects a mixed forest with a high proportion of fir trees, as well as numerous protected plant species. The natural attractions of Piotrków County therefore vary: watersports and recreation take centre stage at the reservoir, while the nature reserve is defined by its forest and plants.

Horse Riding and Regional Culture

In Bogusławice, the Stado Ogierów stud farm offers riding lessons and recreational horse riding for all experience levels, including beginner courses and lunge lessons. Riding lessons take place daily. The visitor offer also includes carriage rides and guided tours of the stud farm; pony rides are available for younger children. Check the current offer and schedule before your visit, as activities and times may change.

In 2000, the Autorska Galeria Sztuki „Nad Czarną i Pilicą” and an open-air museum were established in Taraska. Both belong to the artist Zdzisław Wojciech Słomka and display his work in a hundred-year-old cottage, an outbuilding and a garden. Kłudzice offers a taste of local fare: “Partisan bread” and ice cream made to a house recipe are produced there. Visitors can try both at local events and festivals, among other occasions. Check in advance whether the products will be available on the date of your planned visit.
