When planning a trip to Sulejów, several specific points of interest stand out: churches and architectural history, the Cistercian abbey, a medieval event, and the landscape and waterways. These themes complement one another but relate to different periods and places.

Churches and Architectural History

The three-nave Neo-Gothic St. Florian’s Church was built in 1903 to a design by Feliks Nowicki. It was erected on the site of earlier church buildings dating from 1184 and 1640. The term “three-nave” refers to a layout with three naves, while “Neo-Gothic” describes the style of the building erected in 1903. The architectural form, design, and year of construction all provide specific details that help place the church in context.

The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary offers a different perspective. It was founded by the Ligęzka family in 1644, and its interior features Gothic and Rococo elements. For the chapel, the focus is on the family who founded it and the interior design; for St. Florian’s, it is on the design, Neo-Gothic architecture, and the earlier buildings on the site. The dates, too, refer to different events: 1184 and 1640 to earlier church buildings, 1644 to the founding of the chapel, and 1903 to the construction of St. Florian’s Church.

Medieval History and Cistercian Heritage

A general assembly was held in Sulejów from June 18 to 25, 1318. Representatives of the Polish knighthood and clergy jointly adopted the so-called Sulejów Supplication there. It was a petition to Pope John XXII requesting the restoration of the Kingdom of Poland. This event adds a specific historical episode connected to the town and a clearly stated aim to the architectural history.

The Cistercian abbey offers another perspective on Sulejów. The abbey complex is designated a Polish Historic Monument (Pomnik Historii). The Cistercian abbey, together with the churches of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Thomas Becket in Sulejów-Podklasztorze, is also one of seven sites on a route in the Łódź Voivodeship. Its monument status and place on the route provide two different ways of understanding the complex: as a designated historic monument and as part of a regional route.

Landscape and Waterway

The Dolina Środkowej Pilicy Natura 2000 site is part of the landscape. Its northern section, from Skotniki to Sulejów, lies within Sulejowski Landscape Park; the southern section is in the park’s buffer zone. This distinction explicitly separates the section within the landscape park from the section in the buffer zone. If you are interested in the landscape, this geographical division is a separate aspect to consider alongside the historic buildings.

Two canoe stations were also established in Sulejów, on Podkurnędz and Klasztorna streets. They were part of a 74 km waterway set up between Maluszyn and Sulejów. The two named streets locate the stations in Sulejów, while the route length describes the waterway between Maluszyn and Sulejów. If you would like to combine your trip with canoeing, check in advance whether the stations are currently in use. Before setting out on a canoe trip, check in advance whether the stations are currently in use.
