Pabianicki: Renaissance, Churches and Routes
Accommodation in Pabianicki
In Pabianice, Renaissance architecture, traces of textile history and themed trails come together. A four-hectare park and a cycling loop add to the historic attractions. The city offers a range of options for a stay in Pabianicki, including architectural history, religious places of remembrance and activity on designated routes.
Architecture and Traces of the City's History
The Renaissance manor known as “Zamkowy” is one of the unique and valuable architectural monuments of 16th-century Polish architecture. It lies in the Dobrzynka valley at ul. Stary Rynek 1, on the north side of the street. The “Park im. Juliusza Słowackiego” is located beside the manor. Its four hectares encompass two differently designed banks: the left bank is laid out in the English style, while the right is in the French style. Visitors wishing to take in architecture and landscape together will find two clearly distinct design styles in one place.
A later architectural landmark is the eclectic Ender Palace. It was built in 1883 for Karol and Teodor Ender and is now used for administrative purposes. Since the period after the Second World War, the Museum of the City of Pabianice has been housed in the former manor of the Canons of the Kraków Chapter. The Weaver's House, meanwhile, is a two-storey wooden monument dating from the first half of the 19th century. Its post-and-beam construction was typical of German Saxony. Together, these buildings show different sides of the town's history, from the Renaissance to urban development in the 19th century.
The city's industrial history is also part of Pabianice's routes: the route “Śladami wielokulturowości Pabianic” includes the former weaving mill and spinning mill of the “Krusche i Ender” company, dating from 1891. Pabianice railway station was built in 1901–1902 as one of the stations on the Warsaw–Vienna Railway. Its construction is also part of the city's history, though its historic function should not be taken to mean that the same rail service operates today.
Church Architecture and Religious History
The Church of St Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist and St Lawrence in Pabianice was built in 1583–1588 as a late Renaissance, three-nave brick basilica with a transept. Its architectural details include vaults with lunettes and a Baroque main altar dating from the late 17th century. The same church thus offers a chance to see both late Renaissance architecture and later Baroque furnishings.
The route “Śladami św. Maksymiliana Kolbego po Pabianicach” leads to this church. Rajmund Kolbe, later known as St Maximilian, received his First Communion there in 1906. Another connection to the saint is the regional cycling route “Szlak św. Maksymiliana Kolbego,” which is over 62 kilometres long and passes through Pabianice. The routes appeal to different interests: one connects the city with a specific religious memory, while the other is a longer regional cycling route.
City Routes and Leisure at Lewityn
The route “Śladami wielokulturowości Pabianic” leads to surviving traces of German and Jewish cultures and religions in Pabianice. Visitors interested in this cultural diversity can consider it alongside the Kolbe route: the two routes draw attention to different historical and religious themes. The former weaving mill and spinning mill from 1891 is part of the route exploring the city's multicultural history.
The “Warto zobaczyć” routes also differ in length: the first stage is 6.5 kilometres long, while the second is a 9-kilometre city route to attractions in Pabianice. The route “Pabianice zapisane na taśmie filmowej” is just under 6 kilometres long and is suitable for walks or orienteering events for school groups. This means there is a city route to attractions, a shorter route with specifically stated uses, and two stages of different lengths. The distances help you choose routes to suit your plans for the day.
A 1.5-kilometre cycling loop runs around the ponds at the Lewityn leisure centre. A watersports equipment rental service near the bathing area is open during the summer season; check current operating details before travelling. The cycling loop and the longer city routes offer different types of route.
