Osieczany’s cultural monuments reflect different historical periods: a brick wayside chapel, stone wayside figures and a memorial mound invite visitors to explore the local history from several perspectives. The recorded dates range from the first documentary mention in 1234 to the mound’s construction between 1936 and 1939.

Wayside Chapel and Stone Figures

Osieczany has a brick wayside chapel dating from the 19th century. Inside is a statue of Christ falling under the cross; this depiction is associated with the year 1813. The chapel therefore brings together two different historical details: the building’s dating to a century and the year linked to the scene depicted.

Another local landmark is the stone wayside figures from the 1830s. They include a Pietà, a statue of Christ of Nazareth, and figures of the Virgin Mary, Saint Matthew and the Evangelist John. The subjects thus include figures of Christ and Mary as well as depictions of saints. Those interested in religious imagery can view the named figures as distinct, individual motifs.

The Józef Piłsudski Mound

The Józef Piłsudski Mound in Osieczany is five metres high. It was built between 1936 and 1939 at the initiative of local Legion activists and the village youth. Its history connects a specific period of construction with the people involved in building it, making the memorial site possible to understand through its origins as well.

Stone steps lead up the mound. An information board stands beside the steps, and a memorial stone stands at the top. Its inscription reads: “Marszałkowi Józefowi Piłsudskiemu – młodzież z Osieczan 1936-1939”. The dedication names Marshal Józef Piłsudski and the youth of Osieczany. The information board, steps and inscription each provide their own point of reference: the board offers information, the steps lead to the mound, and the stone bears the dedication.

Osieczany is one of the oldest settlements in the Myślenice region. The first documentary mention of the place dates from 1234. This early written reference is a different historical marker from the depiction in the wayside chapel associated with 1813 or the memorial mound from the 1930s. Taken together, these details offer a broad view of the local history across time, without reducing the individual monuments to the same period.

The History and Hiking Trails of Myślenice

In Myślenice, the historic urban layout is a cultural and historical topic in its own right. It is considered a good example of a medieval town plan and includes surviving relics of a settlement that existed before the town was founded. The urban layout is regarded as a valuable monument at both regional and national levels. The church of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Myślenice can also be dated: it was built in the mid-15th century, and an early Baroque chapel was added between 1642 and 1646.

The sanctuary houses a miraculous image painted in Italy in the 16th century, which became the destination of numerous pilgrimages. Religious life there includes recurring events: the main feast is held on September 8. In addition, from May to October, night-time Fatima devotions with vigils are held on the 13th day of each month. The town plan, church building, image and feast days each illustrate different aspects of Myślenice’s cultural history.

The hiking trails in the Myślenice destination can also be compared by their stated distances and durations. The yellow trail runs from Myślenice via Dalin and Pisania to Sułkowice; it is 13.5 kilometres long and takes three hours and 45 minutes. The red hiking trail from Myślenice via Działek, Kudłacze and Łysina to Jaworzyce is 15.5 kilometres long, with a stated duration of six hours.

Another red trail runs from Myślenice via Sularzówka, Trzebuńska Góra, Babica, Bieńkowska Góra and Końcówka to Palcza. The route is listed as 20.5 kilometres long and taking five hours and 45 minutes one way. Of these three options, the yellow trail is the shortest both in distance and stated duration. For the two red trails, the longer route is associated with a shorter duration according to the stated figures. When planning, it is therefore worth considering distance and duration together rather than using only one of the figures as a basis for comparison.
