St. Nicholas Church on the market square and the different trail and railway routes give a stay in Gąsawa several distinct focal points. For planning, you can choose between church architecture and art, cycling or hiking trails, and the tourist narrow-gauge railway.

St. Nicholas Church: Timber Construction, Wall Paintings and Altar

St. Nicholas Church, dating from the 17th century, stands directly on Gąsawa’s market square. It is built of larch wood using frame-and-log construction and has a notable collection of wall paintings inside. The late Baroque high altar features an image of Our Lady of Consolation, dressed in a repoussé silver robe from the first half of the 18th century. The church’s construction history and an item from a later period thus stand side by side: the silver robe dates from the first half of the 18th century, while the church dates from the 17th century. The parish history goes back further than the church building. The first parish in Gąsawa was established around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. The parish’s early establishment, the church’s construction and its specific interior furnishings can therefore be understood as distinct cultural and historical aspects.

Viewing Platform and View of Biskupin

A wooden viewing platform stands on the road from Gąsawa to Żnin, with a visitor car park right next to it. Inside the platform, a mosaic depicts the attack on Prince Leszek the White during the 1227 gathering of princes. In good weather, the prehistoric settlement at Biskupin can be seen from the platform. The view of the settlement is therefore explicitly weather-dependent. If you plan to use the car park, check its current availability before setting out, as it may change.

Cycling and Hiking Trails with Different Points of Reference

In Gąsawa, the Pałucki Cycling Trail passes the narrow-gauge railway station, crosses the market square and continues to St. Nicholas Church. These three named points help you navigate the cycling route through the town. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

The Dookoła Gąsawy circular route starts near the public school complex on Leszka-Białego Street. It follows Konopnicka Street south towards Huby Gąsawskie and passes through the Ostoja Barcińsko-Gąsawska Natura 2000 area. Check the current trail markings locally. The Pałucki Hiking Trail offers a different point of reference: after leaving Gąsawa, Jezioro Gąsawskie can be seen on the left.

The routes differ in their navigation points: the cycling trail passes the station, market square and church; the circular route has a named starting area and heads south; and the hiking trail is associated with the view of the lake after leaving town. These differences can help you identify each route by its point of reference.

Tourist Narrow-Gauge Railway

The tourist narrow-gauge railway runs for a total of 12 km from Żnin via Wenecja and Biskupin to Gąsawa. The route passes through four named places and differs from the Dookoła Gąsawy circular route and the cycling trail’s local points of reference. The railway operates seasonally. If you are planning a trip, check the timetable and operating days in advance.
