The surrounding area also offers railway history and architectural remains. This lets you decide whether to focus on early settlement or include other cultural destinations.

Archaeology across many periods

The Archaeological Reserve in Biskupin is one of the largest in Europe and covers about 38 hectares. Numerous traces of earlier settlement span the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages; the reserve has been recognized as a Pomnik Historii (Monument of History). This broad time span is useful when planning a themed visit: the archaeological perspective covers many periods, while other nearby destinations feature railway vehicles or preserved building elements.

Train and bus to the museum

During the tourist season, the Żnińska Kolej Powiatowa, also known as the Kolejka Wąskotorowa, runs along the Żnin–Wenecja–Biskupin–Gąsawa route in the surrounding area. Its stop in Biskupin is right beside the Archaeological Museum. As the service is seasonal, check the timetable before your visit.

The museum can be reached by bus from Żnin or Gąsawa. There is a bus stop in Biskupin; the museum car park also has an additional stop on request. When choosing between the two options, take the train’s operating season and the request-only stop at the car park into account.

Routes with different defining points

The two routes can be distinguished by their different descriptions: the Pałucki-Szlak-Rowerowy passes through the built-up area of Biskupin. The Szlak śladami prehistorii starts in Złotowo and ends in Biskupin. Thus, the first route is defined by its course through the built-up area, while the second is defined by its named start and end points. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The Polish route name Szlak śladami prehistorii can also be translated approximately as “Trail in the Footsteps of Prehistory.” The words explain the route’s thematic connection: śladami refers to tracks or traces, and prehistorii to prehistory.

Cultural destinations nearby

Nearby Wenecja adds railway history to the area’s attractions. Its Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum displays a collection of 70 exhibits: steam locomotives, locomotives, rail trolleys and carriages. The oldest exhibits date from the 19th century. Here, the railway has two distinct roles: the Kolej Powiatowa is a seasonal service on the route mentioned above, while the museum in Wenecja showcases a collection of vehicles. This allows you to distinguish the timetable aspect from the subject of the exhibits.

Fragments of stone and brick castle walls and the courtyard have also been preserved in Wenecja. Chata Pałucka is an ethnographic site listed in the register of monuments. Gmina Gąsawa lies on the Szlak Piastowski and offers another regional point of interest.
