Architectural history in Brzezie
Brzezie brings together sacred architecture, a palace complex and park design as distinct historical subjects. The parish church of St. Joseph, the palace and the palace park can each be identified by their own features. The dates span the construction of the palace and a former administrative building in 1873, the creation of the park in 1889, and the church in 1931. The year of construction, architecture and garden design thus offer different points of reference for the history of the town.
Parish Church of St. Joseph
The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Joseph in Brzezie is single-naved and was built in 1931. It was funded by Leopold Julian Kronenberg. “Single-naved” means that the church has one main nave; the term describes the building’s floor plan. A monument inventory dated January 2018 gives the church a period of 1930 to 1936, while the town description lists 1931 as the year of construction. These are different ways of dating it: a single year and a period spanning several years. Together with the information about its benefactor, these dates add historical context to the description of the single-naved church.
Palace and palace complex
The palace in Brzezie was built in 1873 to a design by Warsaw architect Artur Goebel. It is classified as Eclectic and shows influences of the French Renaissance. The two details complement each other: Eclecticism describes the stylistic movement, while the Renaissance influences identify a specific historical reference. The year of construction, architect and style each provide a distinct element of its architectural classification.
The palace complex comprises several buildings dating from the late 19th century. The brick “Wilsonówka” and brick “Dworek” are outbuildings from this period; a brick stable is also part of the complex. A former administrative building in the complex dates from 1873. These names and dates distinguish the individual components without treating them as a single building.
The main entrance gate to the palace grounds was also built in 1873. The pillars feature rustication; two screen walls have rusticated corners and blind windows. Rustication refers to masonry surfaces finished to project from the wall. The description of the gate therefore covers specific construction details, as well as the date it was built: the pillars, wall sections and their façade treatment.
Palace park and other historical features
The palace park in Brzezie was designed by Walerian Kronenberg and laid out in 1889. Its design combines landscape and formal garden styles. This combination of different garden styles is a distinct aspect of the park’s history. The features described include a varied tree population and surviving sections of chestnut and hornbeam rows. The historic layout of the paths is also quite well preserved. The park’s design can therefore be understood both through its different styles and through the surviving rows and paths.
A monument inventory dated January 2018 places the Roman Catholic parish cemetery in Brzezie in the late 19th century. It dates a memorial cross by a lake in the town to the last quarter of the same century. These dates add further historical features in Brzezie to the history of the church, palace complex and park. The cross is dated to a period, not a single year of construction; the cemetery is assigned to the late 19th century.
