Obrzycko lies on the left bank of the Warta. At the confluence of the Sama and the Warta is an early medieval fortified settlement site. The riverside setting and confluence provide two specific geographical reference points. If you are looking for a hotel in Obrzycko, the town’s distinctive features raise questions about the landscape, early settlement history and architecture.

Church of Saints Peter and Paul

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul was built in the Baroque style from 1714 to 1756, based on a design by Pompeo Ferrari. Its floor plan is shaped like a Greek cross; in 1906, the building was extended to the west with a nave designed by Roger Sławski. A Greek-cross floor plan is cross-shaped, with four arms of equal length. Thus, the floor-plan design and the western extension represent different phases in the building’s history.

The Rococo interior furnishings date from 1780 and were probably made based on earlier designs by Pompeo Ferrari. The parish church also houses Eugenio Caxés’ 1609 painting “The Last Supper,” which comes from the Jeronimos Monastery in Guadalupe, Spain. The tomb of Gniezno Archbishop Ignacy Raczyński is also located there.

Town Hall: Construction Period and Older Details

The town hall was built in the Baroque style in the mid-17th century. A marble Renaissance window surround at the town hall dates from 1527. Atanazy Raczyński had it brought here from the Portuguese Batalha Monastery in 1843. The dates refer to different events: 1527 dates the window surround, 1843 its transfer, and the mid-17th century the construction of the town hall. The town hall tower bears a sandstone plaque with the Nałęcz-Raczyński coat of arms and the inscription “Vitam Impendere Vero.”

Palace and Park Complex Nearby

In the immediate vicinity of Obrzycko, in Obrzycko-Zielona Góra, there is a palace and park complex considered a valuable example of a residential estate. It includes an eclectic palace built for the Raczyński family in 1856–1857, as well as a pheasantry built in 1910. The complex is set in a landscape park on the high northern bank of the Warta. This adds a distinct architectural and landscape feature in the nearby area to the buildings in the town. The palace and pheasantry date from later building phases than the church and town hall in Obrzycko.

River Landscape and Municipal Area

The forests of the Puszcza Notecka extend across the northern part of the Obrzycko municipality. This is a landscape feature at the municipal level, while the left bank of the Warta describes the location of the town itself. This distinction can help you navigate between the specific riverbank and the larger forest area within the municipality. Obrzycko is also home to the tower of a Protestant church that is currently unused.
