In Licheń Stary, sacred architectural history and places of religious practice sit alongside a seasonal bathing area on Lake Licheńskie. The Basilica of Licheń, Golgotha, St. Dorothy’s Church and the Józef Jarzębowski Museum offer different points of interest for planning your trip, from the organ ensemble and architecture to building history, collections and pilgrimage practices.

Basilica: Building History and Organ Ensemble

The Basilica of Licheń was built between 1994 and 2004 and is the largest sacred building in Poland. Its construction period and size ranking offer different points of reference: its more recent history and the building’s standing in Poland. The organ ensemble is named after Saint John Paul II; it is currently the largest organ ensemble in Poland and the fourth-largest in Europe. For your trip planning, the building and its music offer two distinct focal points: you can explore the basilica’s history or plan your visit around the organ ensemble.

The ensemble can be heard during every Holy Mass and at scheduled concerts. Specific concert dates may vary; check them if you would like to time your visit to coincide with a concert. The regular opportunity to hear it during a Holy Mass and the individual scheduled concerts have different implications for planning your time.

Golgotha: A Landscaped Hill and Pilgrimage Route

Golgotha is a 25-metre-high hill made of stone and concrete. Its features include maze-like passages, grottos, chapels, figures and reliefs. A winding path leads to the summit and is used for quiet reflection during pilgrimages. This site combines a specific built form with a religious practice. In contrast to the basilica, Golgotha focuses on the landscaped hill and the path, while the basilica, with its organ ensemble, offers a different architectural and musical emphasis.

St. Dorothy’s Church and Museum

St. Dorothy’s Church in Licheń Stary offers a glimpse of a different period. The Neo-Gothic parish church was founded by the Kwilecki family. It dates from 1854; the presbytery was added in 1872, the sacristy and vestibule in 1903, and the church was remodelled and enlarged in 1978. The chronology distinguishes the original building from later additions and renovations. By comparison, the basilica was built between 1994 and 2004. The difference in dates makes the distinct building phases in Licheń Stary tangible.

The Józef Jarzębowski Museum in Licheń Stary holds more than ten thousand exhibits, and its collection continues to grow. It complements the churches as a distinct collection-focused attraction. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider different cultural perspectives: the development of individual sacred buildings and a continually growing museum collection.

Planning Your Visits

If a tour of the Papal Apartments is offered on the day of your visit, it is available only with a guide and is free of charge. If a tour is available on a weekday, it must be arranged in advance with the Pilgrim Services Office. Check the dates before you travel and arrange a guided tour for your visit day.

An undated schedule lists the seasonal bathing area at the beach on Lake Licheńskie as operating from July 1 to August 31, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; it has not been confirmed whether these hours are still in effect. Before your visit, check whether these hours apply to your date. The information about the apartments and the bathing area concerns different planning considerations: advance arrangements for a guided tour in one case, and seasonal operating hours in the other.
