Discover Kępno: Museum, Architecture and Walking Routes
Accommodation in Kępno
Kępno lies on the Niesób River, also called the Samica locally, on the Wysoczyzna Wieruszowska plateau. Key landmarks in the town include the square-shaped market square, the museum, historic buildings and walking routes. The market square covers one hectare and shapes the town’s historic layout.
Market Square, Museum and Town History
The Muzeum Ziemi Kępińskiej im. T. P. Potworowskiego is located in the town centre on the market square. It is housed in a building constructed in 1846, which served as the town hall until 1975. The museum features the permanent exhibition “Z historii Kępna” as well as the exhibitions “Dziedzictwo Żydowskie w Kępnie” and “Kolory Potworowskiego”. Together, these present local history, Jewish heritage and Potworowski’s colours as distinct exhibition themes.
The town hall, built in 1835, also stands on the market square: a two-storey brick building in the classical style, with a clock tower in the middle of the square. It was built between the construction of the Kępno synagogue in 1814–1815 and the later construction of other town buildings. The synagogue replaced an earlier wooden synagogue. Its monumental Tuscan portico refers to the façade of the opera house in Potsdam.
Buildings from Different Periods
The present-day Roman Catholic Church of St Martin was built in 1911 in the Neo-Baroque style. Its interior contains an 18th-century main altar, as well as Baroque sculptures preserved from earlier altars. The present-day post office building was constructed in 1888–1889 in the Neo-Renaissance style. Another striking landmark is the 42.5-metre-high water tower: its design is Neo-Gothic, with understated Romanesque elements, and it is topped by a roof that draws on Baroque design.
Railway Station and Routes through Kępno
Kępno railway station is a rare two-storey station. Two railway lines cross there, and the separate platforms are at different heights. The walking routes also have different landmarks. The yellow Wielkopolska walking trail WK, OP, ŁD-193y passes through Kępno, including the Kępno viaduct by the railway station and a crossing over the Samica. The blue Wielkopolska trail WK-3672N runs in Kępno from the main railway station via Kopiec to the Przemysłowa housing estate. Trail markers and conditions may change; check the current route before setting out.
The town park has paved paths and walking trails, as well as park lighting. It also has an outdoor fitness area with equipment specially adapted for older people. Northwest of Kępno, in the destination’s surrounding area, the so-called Kopiec preserves the remains of a medieval fortification. It existed from the first half of the 13th century to the second half of the 15th century.
If you’re looking for a hotel in Kępno, you can plan your trip around your interests, whether that’s architectural and town history, exhibitions or the walking routes described here.
