Maninoa by the lagoon and reef

Maninoa, Si’umu Sasa’e and Si’umu Sisifo lie at the western end of the district, on the edge of a large lagoon. The reef system that forms the lagoon is bounded to the east by the rocky headland at Aganoa and to the west by the reef passages at Maninoa. This places the area at both ends of the lagoon system: Aganoa lies on the eastern side, while the reef passages at Maninoa form the western boundary.

There is also a large wetland at Maninoa. It is a distinct landscape feature alongside the lagoon formed by the reef system. If you choose Maninoa for its natural setting, both features are part of the local landscape: the lagoon and the wetland at Maninoa.

Surfing and beach time

A surf area stretches along Upolu’s south coast from Maninoa to Matatufu. Maninoa is one endpoint of this regional surf stretch, so the surfing area extends beyond the village along the coast.

The Maninoa Beach Tour includes lunch and time to relax at Maninoa Beach. Check the current offering before planning, as inclusions may change. The surf stretch describes Maninoa in the context of Upolu’s south coast, while the tour covers two specific activities at Maninoa Beach. For your trip planning, these offer two distinct points of interest: a regional coastal connection and a beach excursion.

Samoa as a broader travel destination

In the broader travel destination of Samoa, Maninoa Surf Camp is on Upolu’s south shore, next to Sinalei Resort. Accommodation options include open-sided beach fales, as well as deluxe and executive apartment-style accommodation; availability may change.

Samoa comprises ten islands, four of which are inhabited: Upolu, Savai’i, Apolima and Manono. This provides a broader geographical context for choosing a destination beyond a single coastal village.

Other nature and culture attractions in Samoa include the To-Sua Ocean Trench. It is 30 metres deep, and a long ladder leads to a platform in the water-filled pool. A cave in the trench leads to the open sea, and diving there is recommended for experienced divers. At Sopoaga Waterfall, there is an area for demonstrations of umu cooking and coconut husking. The Papase’ea Sliding Rocks have two sliding areas, one for children and one for adults.

For other destinations in Samoa, travel times from Apia offer different points of reference: Palolo Deep Marine Reserve is about a five-minute walk from central Apia. Piula Cave Pool is about 45 minutes from Apia; travel time may vary depending on conditions. Papase’ea Sliding Rocks is about a 15-minute drive from Apia, also depending on conditions. All the distances and travel times are from Apia, not Maninoa; walking and driving are also different measures.
